Two In The Hand - A Set Completed!

 

1990 Topps.

 

It may seem incredible to think, especially among you set collectors out there, but this is the most recent Topps base set I have ever completed. Heck, even if I expand it to any of the big base sets of the time, that would only take me to 1991 (Donruss - although I do have an unopened set of 1991 Upper Deck as well). It's easier to believe that this 35 year gap has occurred when you factor in that I stepped away from the hobby for roughly 25 of those years. Still, for as long as I've been back collecting, 1990 is still quite a ways back. 

That is no longer the case.

 

I'm happy to say that for the first time since I was in high school, I have completed a Topps base set! The last time I checked in, I was 2 cards shy of completing the 2024 Topps set. Thanks to a TCDB member from Round Rock, TX named Shane, those last two cards are now in my possession!  

 

 

There's some nice symmetry going on there with two identically uniformed Reds hitting from opposite sides. As is often the case, one of the last cards was also one of the hot rookie cards of the set, Elly De La Cruz. I was expecting it to take awhile to get that card, but it only took three trade proposals to get someone to accept.

Hubbard's only at-bat came in the 7th inning of the 1983 All-Star game, when he pitch hit for Steve Sax. He got a single after the ball hopped past another first-time All-Star, Cal Ripken Jr.

Mr. Noel's bat flip is better. You look at this card of "Big Christmas", and you can practically hear the thunderclap of the fans' collective roar. Break through that shiny card border, Jhonkkensy, because you just ruined some pitcher's night.

OK, I gotta be honest. If this pack didn't have a natural bat flip theme going for it, this Steer card would have won 1st Place easily. As far as slides into home plate go, this is dang near perfect!

A Trio Of Tiny TCDB Trades

Sometimes when I do small 1 or 2 card trades, I feel like they aren't enough to warrant their own blog post. I've done a lot of these trades since the calendar flipped to 2025, so in an effort to catch up a bit, I decided to bundle some together.

 

First, I have a TCDB trade with Samuel from Stromsburg, NE. It was a small 2 card trade, but one of those cards ended up in the Time Travel Trading stack. The one card I got for myself was this great Yaz from the 2016 Topps Bunt set. I can't help but look at the positioning of the catcher's mitt and think he's holding Yaz up!

 

 

Next was a trade proposed to me by Steffan of Austin, TX. I still haven't seen any of the 2024 Topps Update set locally, so I've been picking up the Red Sox from the set when I can. I also knock off the old desired list a card of World Series MVP Steve Pearce!

 

Our final trade of the day comes from John over in Lumberton, NJ. His original trade proposition was a very lopsided trade where I sent two cards and he would have sent 10 needed cards from my pursuit of the 2024 Topps set. Unfortunately by then I had those cards coming in from elsewhere, but I was able to counter with these two cards from the 1st Series of the 1980 Cramer Baseball Legends set. These are the only 2 Red Sox in Series 1, so that's one more team set complete!

 

 

My sincerest thanks to Samuel, Steffan, and John! These cards may not have been worth the stamp you used to send them, but they are greatly appreciated!

Spiers never reached the World Series in his 13-year career in MLB. Afterwards, he joined his alma mater's football staff and was a student assistant coach when the Clemson Tigers won the National Championship in 2017. He is currently in his third season as Clemson’s director of special teams.

Free Cards From The Angels In Order

Back in January, Tom from The Angels In Order graciously had a giveaway on his blog. Over 150 cads were available, and commenters were allowed to pick up to 8. There was a lot of great stuff, and I'm quite happy to add some cards to the 'ol collection!

 

2002 Topps #704 Ichiro (GG) - Fresh off of his election to the Hall of Fame, I guess I had Irichro on the brain!

 

1994 Studio #159 Roger Clemens - I'm always glad to grab a Clemens I don't need. Tom actually had two Clemens available, but I already had the other one.

 

1986 Topps - 1986 All-Star Set Collector's Edition (Glossy Send-Ins) #12 Ron Guidry,  #32 Tom Herr, and #56 Rich Gossage - I have a soft spot for those mail-in cards from the 80's. I never sent away for them as a kid, and I kind of wished I did.

 

1984 Topps Ralston Purina #3 Ted Simmons - I also have a soft spot for the Purina food-issue cards, for no other reason that there was a Purina plant in my hometown and there were days the surrounding neighborhood would smell like cat food. (It's weird what you remember as a child sometimes, isn't it? I didn't even live near that part of town..)

 

1973 Topps #136 Orioles Field Leaders (MGR, CO) - Couldn't pass up an early 70's card featuring a Hall of Fame manager!

 

1964 Topps #270 Rich Rollins - I watch the games now and occasional wonder how so many ballplayers back then wore glasses. Did Rollins ever lose his specs while making a play?

Plugging Along, Down To Just Two!

I'm getting there. Slowly but surely (Don't call me Shirley!), I'm still working on that 2024 base set, and have made lots of progress thanks to some great people!

 

Greg (Night Owl Cards) generously sent along some extras he had, saving me from hunting down  a couple of extra trade partners on the TCDB:

 

 

One of those trade partners was Brian from Mt. Juliet, TN. It was just a small trade that took out 3 cards from the set, but I did get a couple of Red Sox from the Update Series as well!

 

 

Tim from Charles Town, WV also had a few cards I needed, including the last 3 cards I needed for the 2000 Topps Red Sox team set.

 

 

Max from Hartsel, CO is up next, with a half dozen more cards I needed for last year's set, as well as one of the remaining non-SP cards I needed for the 2016 Topps Archives set. (I haven't done much with that set at all!)

 

Although not part of the set build, I also have to give a big shout out to Johnny (Johnny's Trading Spot) who sent along most of the Red Sox from the 582 Montgomery Club parallel set.

 

 

It's still a parallel set many of us don't see a need for, but at least Topps tried to make it stand out for this year's edition.

 

Thanks to all of these wonderful people, I'm down to just TWO cards left to complete the set! Granted one of the key cards from the set, the Elly De la Cruz rookie, is one of those cards... There are over 100 TCDB members with that card in their For?Sale Trade list, so I'm hopeful I'll eventually find someone I can match up in a trade.

 

Will I get this set done by Opening Day? I'm hopeful!

Fullmer attended Montclair College Preparatory School in Van Nuys, California along with Ortiz. In 2002, Fullmer's Angels and Ortiz's Giants squared off in the World Series. Fullmer got a hit off Ortiz in each of the two games Ortiz pitched as the Angels defeated the Giants in 7 games.

First Impressions: 2025 Topps

New year, new baseball cards! Sure, I know that these cards have been all over the internet now, and opinions have been given en masse, but you still haven't heard my thought on them have you? That is why you're here, right? So as I opened up my first tantalizing pack of 2025 Topps, I made a note of my first impressions, which I'm happy to share with you now

 

#209 Taylor Ward

 

 

The honor of the first card goes to Mr. Taylor. Right off the bat, I noticed the bat! Swing that giant pencil Taylor! Unfortunately, the next thing I noticed was the LAA team abbreviation on the side (or in this case "AA" since the bat almost perfectly wipes out the "L"). Turns out this is how Topps decided to notate teams on horizontal cards. One could argue that this was done because of the smaller amount of space on the ribbon, but then again for the city-less Athletics, they didn't have any trouble squeezing the whole team name on there. It doesn't look good to be honest, and the design team could have easily made the set look  a whole lot more cohesive with just a bit more effort.

Another design fail comes with a player's last name in black. It doesn't show up well, especially on scans/photos. Other than that, the design itself is OK. It's not as exciting as last year's design, but a solid design nonetheless. I do like the attempt to do something new with the positional dots on the baseball diamond. It works and makes this set unique.

As far as the backs go, the 2025 design is pretty straightforward and bland. The card numbers are nice and readable, so kudos for that.

As long as MLB is going to shove the City Connect jerseys down our throats, the cards are going to do likewise. Part of the allure this year's card set design is that the colors match the team's traditional colors. The City Connect uniforms take away from that.

In keeping with the numerous ways Topps rehashes their old designs, we once again have the completely arbitrary 35th Anniversary set. Personally, I have always liked the 1990 set design, so I don't mind this too much, but now that Topps has reached the 90's, we are rapidly approaching the time I stepped away from the hobby and thusly will no longer care about this yearly insert...

Another returning insert series is the Stars of MLB. This is probably the best design they've come up with since they started doing this insert in 2022.

The "Macho Man" gets the honor of being my first 2025 Red Sox card! Not a bad card at all, and despite his struggles last year, I still think we haven't seen the best of him yet. I will point out that Yoshida gets the LF designation, despite only appearing in the field for 1 game last year. He should be listed as a DH.

I've always had a soft spot for Future Stars cards, especially when they use a script reminiscent of the original 1987 ones.

We end the pack with a League Leaders subset card. I'm glad they're actually showing the players who led the league, but once again Topps would rather stick to a trifecta of players rather than give proper due to Skubal and all three players who finished second with 16 wins (Poor Carlos Rondon...)

 

Overall I like the set, even though in some cases it seems to get in it's own way. I think some minor tweaks could have made this set even better.

 

 

Trapped In Time: Remnants Of The 115th And 116th Trades

 

It's time to thin the herd! Chances are if a card has been sitting in the trade stack for over 3 years, it isn't going to get traded. (Obviously there have been exceptions to this, but for the most part it's true.) Today I offer up leftovers from two more 2021 trades.

Ericks's story is of the more unfortunate ones in baseball. After establishing himself as a key bullpen member with the Pirates, his agent was close to what would have been a multi-million dollar contract. Unfortunately, Ericks got hurt before it happened, and never played again. He ended up working three jobs to make ends meet, with a minimum wage job at Wal-Mart being his main source of income.

Time Travel Trading Update #98

Hard to believe it has been 7 years. I started this idea with a single pack of 2018 Topps, and from there it has grown and grown. Over 300 trades and thousands of cards later, it's still going strong! Every year I've done this, I've added a pack from the latest Topps base set. I'm happy to say that this year I continue the the tradition with some cards from the new 2025 Topps base set:

 

I'm hoping to have a post with my initial impressions of the set soon, but for now I'll say it's a solid looking set. I'll also add that I'm not entirely sure which of the multitude of parallels the Jacob Wilson card is, but I'm fairly confident it comes from the Diamante Foil parallels.

Today's post isn't special just because the new cards, but I also have a lot of great trades that have added some amazing cards to the trade stack. I'm going to kick things off with a personal swap I did. I had a TCDB proposal come through where the other collector requested some 80's cards from the stack. To get the trade done I swapped them out for a couple of 1980 Topps cards:

Food Issues/Oddball cards do fairly well here, so I'm hoping these Drake's cards will be a hot commodity!

I'm super excited to show off this next one. A TCDB member named Jay sent a proposal where he would get some vintage cards, and originally offered to send close to 30 newer cards from my personal want list! It was tempting, but I ultimately decided to stick with the Time Travel Trading parameters and request older cards in return. I'm glad I did, because now I can add these beauties to the stack!

 

Up until this trade, I have never held a 1951 Topps Red Backs card before, let alone own one. They're not in the best shape, but they are still awesome. As it turns out, Jay was one of the very first Time Travel Traders, claiming a card from that original 2018 pack! Our second trade was every bit as great as the first!

Our next trade comes once again via the TCDB. A collector named Tim, who also did a Time Travel Trade with me years ago, contacted me for another match-up. This trade netted me 2 very nice football cards.

 

I am not a football card collector myself, but there's just something appealing about those vintage sets that even I can appreciate!

So far, I've been going back and forth between trades from fellow bloggers and TCDB members. This next one if from a blogger who normally uses the TCDB for our trades! Brendan (The View From The Third Floor) always sends back a nice mix of cards, and this time is no exception:

The 2009 TriStar Obak is a card in particular I'd like to highlight. It's a fun minor league card of Sammy Baugh, who wasn't much of a baseball player but eventually became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame!

Yet another TCDB trade, this time a single card from a gent named Samuel.

Our last trade of the day is also the biggest! Once again a TCDB member who Time Traveled once years ago comes back again for a second trade. Ben traded with me back in 2021, and this time around he was in the hunt for a large amount of 1972 Topps cards, among others.

Just want to point out that the Joe Foy is actually an O-Pee-Chee card, which is why I had him separate from the photo of 1970 cards. 1970 Topps is easily the largest set represnted in the trade stack now.
