(I knew it wouldn't take 7 months...)
Back in December, Nick of the blog Dime Boxes celebrated the 10 year anniversary of his blog. He decided the best way to mark the occasion was to give away free cards - a lot of free cards! Over the course of the next few months, he had 10 posts containing at least 10 pages worth of cards to anyone who wanted them. That's roughly 1,000 cards given away! Of course, I picked up some as they were offered. Those posts were a long time ago, to the point that when my bounty arrived, I found myself wondering why I picked the cards I did! I found that the cards generally fell into the following 8 categories:
Cards of Red Sox players
This is pretty obvious. Red Sox fan claims Red Sox cards.
Favorite Card: 1994 Upper Deck Baseball: The American Epic - GM #9 Ted Williams
Cards of players with Red Sox connections
Minor leaguers, guys in the "wrong" uniform, even a card from one of the more disappointing moments in Red Sox history - all have their connections, and sometimes that's good enough for me!
Favorite Card: 1986 Fleer #368 Dennis Eckersley
Food Issue Oddballs
From cereal to sandwiches, who doesn't like food issues?
Favorite Cards: 1991 Kellogg's Corn Flakes Baseball Greats #8 Steve Carlton and #10 Lou Brock
Vintage Cards
I was usually one of the "late to the party" types whenever Nick posted his latest round of giveaways. Most of the cards were picked over, but every so often, a vintage card was left behind. I wasn't going to let those babies go unclaimed!
Favorite Card: 1973 Topps #233 Ed Kirkpatrick
Hall Of Famers
Hall of Fame players are always a good choice, and I got a nice selection of some of baseball's very best!
Favorite Card: 2005 UD Past Time Pennants #60 Orlando Cepeda
Ted Williams Set Cards
It helps that these sets were named after a Red Sox legend, but even without the name association, these are fantastic cards that often showcased the Negro and All-American Girls Professional Baseball Leagues.
Favorite Card: 1994 Ted Williams #98 Alma Ziegler (WB)
80's Fun
As a child of the 80's, cards from this era always hold a place near and dear to my heart.
Favorite Card: 1983 Fleer #318 Rick Rhoden
Miscellaneous Pickups
These cards don't really fit the mold, but stuck out to me for one reason or another. Kenny Loggins wanna-be Jack McDowell was an easy choice. I like the Bunt/Big League sets enough to pick up the Rizzo and Acuna. Yelich with a backdrop of Chicago ivy caught my eye. Fernandez, in addition to being one of the final cards issued after his tragic death, also celebrates an award he won. I've always liked when awards were included on cards, and now have half of this insert set.
Favorite Card: 2020 Topps Big League #82 Ronald Acuna Jr.
Nick also generously included some additional Red Sox cards, but that's a topic for another post...
Thanks Nick, and once again congratulations on ten years of blogging! (I'm almost halfway there!)
For someone who was showing up late, you sure got a lot of good stuff.
ReplyDeleteRed Sox: Bogaerts
ReplyDeleteRed Sox Connections: Eck
Food Issue: Cooper
Vintage: Thomas
Hall of Fame: Aaron
Ted Williams: Mays
'80s: Griffey
Miscellaneous: Acuna
Good batch.
Nick always sends cool oddball stuff. I really like the 1981 Topps Scratchoffs.
ReplyDeleteWow that ERod Mosaic card is really bright!
ReplyDeleteI was also late to the party, but it was kinda on purpose because I felt being a non-trade partner I should be at the back of the line. Still there was enough good stuff to be pleased with the picks.
