Repack Haiku #262 (Sparky Lyle)

Yankees are heartless:
Reward Lyle for Cy Young year
By signing Gossage

1981 Topps #719 Sparky Lyle

Sparky won the Cy Young Award in 1977, becoming the first AL reliever ever to win. How did the Yankees react to a historic season? They signed future Hall of Famer Goose Gossage that very off-season to be their closer.

This post was specially crafted with love as part as a contest being held over at It's Like Having My Own Card Shop. You can win a Sparky Lyle rookie card (along with a bunch of other cards) just by commenting!

  1. That's the Yankees for ya. Watch this offseason, if they dont sign Aaron Judge long-term they'll just trade for Soto or Trout.

    1. Last time they traded for Trout it went very poorly. (Steve Trout trade, 1987)

  2. I wonder if Gossage and Lyle got along in the clubhouse in 1978.

    1. By all accounts they did - Lyle blamed Steinbrenner, not Gossage. Graig Nettles said it best - Cy Young to Sayonara!
