Sparky won the Cy Young Award in 1977, becoming the first AL reliever ever to win. How did the Yankees react to a historic season? They signed future Hall of Famer Goose Gossage that very off-season to be their closer.

ReplyDeleteBy all accounts they did - Lyle blamed Steinbrenner, not Gossage. Graig Nettles said it best - Cy Young to Sayonara!
