Completed! The Best Of 1988 Topps UK Minis

Earlier this week I showed off the last cards I needed to finish the 1988 Topps UK Minis set. Completing a set is always a noteworthy occasion, so I thought it would be fun to show off some cards and give out some yearbook style superlatives.

Best Red Sox card: Dwight Evans

My choices were Dewey, Wade Boggs standing in a batting cage, and Roger Clemens standing after throwing a pitch. Dewey's action photo wins out in the end.

Best Hall of Fame player: Kirby Puckett

It doesn't take much thought to pinpoint when this photo was taken. Puckett gets a World Series photo for his card, and a great one at that!

Best card back: Zane Smith

The UK Minis set incorporates the beloved trivia cartoons on the back. There were some good ones, but I too derive enjoyment from listening to hard rock music, so Zane wins this award. (I do find it funny the cartoon appears to be snapping along with the music..can't say I've done that with any hard rock songs...)

Best smile: Dave Parker

All too often, ballplayers look too tired or too serious on their cards. Dave genuinely appears happy to have his photo taken!

Best action shot: Dave Stewart

This set contains your typical baseball shots: batter batting and pitchers pitching. Nothing really stood out, so I chose Stewart and his fist-pumping action.

Best background: Tom Henke

Most of the backgrounds are blurred, but Henke gets a somewhat clear background full of empty seats and a teammate taking batting practice.

Best facial hair: Ryne Sandberg

Hey! I had that same mustache in high school!

Best thing about the set

It's a UK set, which means you have a fun way to learn English! No? OK, then I'm going with the fantastic design on the front and a back that has a lot of fun elements on the back.

Biggest surprise

For a small set, it did well with the players on the checklist, as 20 of the 87 players listed ended up in the Hall of Fame (Along with a few who would be if not for some, ahem, personal choices...). There were a few notable misses though, with Carlton Fisk probably being the most notable.

Repack Haiku #293 (Juan Nieves)

Arm trouble ended
Career at age twenty-three
Now respected coach

1989 Topps #287 Juan Nieves

After becoming the second youngest pitcher to throw a no-hitter in 1987, few collectors would have guessed in 1989 that this card would end up being his sunset card. Currently an assistant pitching coach for the Detroit Tigers, he was the pitching coach for the Red Sox from 2013 to 2015. Here's a picture of him with Jon Lester from a 2013 Spring Training game I attended:

Feeling The Love!

Tomorrow is Saint Valentine's Day, which may or may not be a relevant holiday in your life. For me, it's become just a commercialized opportunity for me to show my wife and daughters that they are special to me. Granted, I try to do that the other 364 days of the year too, but tomorrow is all about feeling loved.

I've been feeling the love from my fellow collectors a lot lately. An extra card in a trade, a appreciated comment on my blog, even an unexpected mailing - these acts of kindness always put a smile on my face, and encourage me to pay that feeling forward. Today's post is about showing off some of those lovely cards:

I guess I'll start off with the biggest  package. Anyone who has dealt with regular blog reader Oren know how generous he often is. I wasn't expecting anything from him, and yet awhile back he sent me some wonderful Red Sox cards:

He even included a couple of relics, personal favorite J.D, Martinez and hopeful favorite Trevor Story!

I almost went all of 2022 without completing a major set. I'm close to a few, but it was looking like those would be 2023 goals. Jeff (Wax Pack Wonder) changed that with his Time Travel Trade last December. Included as a bonus were the last 6 cards I needed to complete the 1988 Topps UK Mini set!

I'm excited to finally have this set done. I've had most of these cards for decades, and even though I'm not a huge fan of minis, I have always loved the design of this set.

Finally, I got another bonus card from a Time Travel Trade. Greg (Night Owl Cards) passed along this serial numbered foilboard parallel of the recently retired "Mayor of Ding-Dong City",  Travis Shaw.

Thanks Oren, Jeff, and Greg! I'll take these cards over Hallmark's any day!

TCDB Trade Recap: Cards From Aiken, SC

At my local Walmart, the barren stock on the shelves continues. (OK barren is a strong word - the shelves are absolutely packed with last year's hockey and an overly optimistic supply of World Cup soccer!) As someone who relies on retail for the latest baseball releases, I've been mostly shut out. I haven't much of Series 2, or any of of Update. Don't even bother asking about Archives or Stadium Club. As a result, my yearly goal of obtaining at least the Red Sox team set has relied on mostly trades. It's been a slow process, but I can now put the 2022 Red Sox team to bed, thanks to a trade from a TCDB member named Mark.

These were the last 7 cards I needed from Series 2. I'm already dreading the thought of no 2023 Topps in my area...

Favorite Card: Christian Arroyo raises his hand in triumph!

Thanks for the cards, Mark!

Repack Haiku #292 (Will Clark)

Clark for Mattingly?
An unfortunate event
Nixed this All-Star trade

1990 Donruss #230 Will Clark

It could have happened! According to the article, the parameters of the deal was agreed upon that would send Clark and 2 lefty pitchers to the Bronx for Yankee legend Don Mattingly and another player. The Giants got concerned about sending the two pitchers over once Dave Dravecky's tumor diagnosis came to light.

All I Do Is Win, Win, Win...

Sometime last summer, Johnny (Johnny's Trading Spot) decided to run almost daily giveaways to people who commented on his blog posts. Half a year later and he's still giving cards away! I've won a few more times recently, and Johnny continues to tailor the prize packages to my personal team tastes.

The first group of 9 features my first of last year's Topps Holiday cards. I like the set well enough, although I wish Topps had utilized the white border more, along the lines of what they did with the 2019 set. I also get my first Stadium Club card, and it happens to be one of my top 10 Red Sox cards for the year. Topping it off is some cards of the man, the myth, the legend Pedro Martinez. I do love me some Pedro cards!

Clemens and Martinez. Two of the most dominate pitchers in Red Sox history, and both of them personal favorites.

Thanks for the cards Johnny!

Going To 11

On December 7, 2011, a guy named Nick started up a blog called Dime Boxes - The Low-End Baseball Card Collector's Journey. Do you know what I was doing then? Enjoying being a father for the second time, as my daughter was born 10 days prior. On one hand, you have a young guy thinking "I should start a blog!", while on the other hand is a not as young guy thinking "How can such a tiny thing produce that much poop?" Everyone travels there own unique path.

One thing Nick shares with my daughter is an abundance of kindness. Shortly after my daughter celebrated her self-professed life as a "pre-teen", Nick celebrated his blog's life by giving away some cards.

As is my luck with such giveaways, I came late to the table and the majority of cards were already claimed. I was able to snag a red Sox MVP and four Hall of Famers though:

When I said I was a late comer, I meant it. I even double checked, there were 26 people who claimed cards before me. How did so many people let a 61 year old card of a Hall of Fame pitcher slip down to me? I'm amazed. Grateful but amazed. It was fun to get that Carlton card too. I knew it couldn't have been from the 1977 set, but it wasn't until I had it in hand that it was a cloth sticker from 2012 Archives.

Of course, Nick included bonus cards, and they were nothing short of amazing:

A couple of online cards, an oddball Ted Williams, and a pair of Hostess Hall of Famers highlight the group for me.

Favorite Card: Hal Newhouser and that great 1961 Fleer design

Thanks for the cards, Nick! Here's hoping your blog's "pre-teen" years will give you less grey hairs than my daughter is sure to give me. Happy blogaversary!

Repack Haiku #291 (Bruce Sutter)

First relief pitcher
Elected to Hall of Fame
Without starting once

1989 Fleer #603 Bruce Sutter

Sutter (who passed away last October) pitched in 661 games over his 12 year career, all of them in relief.

Blogger Trade: Trade With The Angels In Order

Sometimes they come back. Everyone's favorite Angels blogger, Tom from The Angels In Order, has been blogging with more regularity again. he's been offering up cards as trade bait, and I took advantage of one of his posts to snag some cards:

By the time I got there, there was only one Red Sox card left that I needed (Middlebrooks). Still, I found some great cards of Hall of Famers, the all-time hit king, plus a Red Sox fan favorite in a weird shade of blue.

Favorite Card: Even though he's in the wrong uniform, I can't help but feel Brock Holt's excitement and energy!

Thanks for the cards, Tom!

Trapped In Time: Remnants Of The 29th Trade

The first Time Travel Trade of 2019 was a big one. It also happens to be the subject of 2023's first Trapped In Time:

This trade with Bo saw 24 cards come back to me. In a true oddity, a whopping 10 cards remain after all this time! The remaining cards fall into 3 sets, so let's take a look at each and see what we got.

Basketball cards are a bit hit-and-miss in the trade stack. Not many people I'm aware of actively collect basketball, so this sport doesn't tend to generate a ton of interest. I have had success trading away some vintage as well as cards of the bigger names in the sport, but these two guys just haven't had any takers.

I'm genuinely surprised by this lot of 1971 Topps cards. No superstars, but a lot of recognizable All-Star names here. Why no one has grabbed them is quite a mystery! (UPDATE: Wouldn't you know it? I type all this up and schedule it in advance, and someone claims all 5 of the 1971 Topps cards!)

On the other hand, I'm not surprised at all that these 1961 cards have lasted so long. One looks like it was dipped in Kool-Aid, while the other two have some interesting but nonetheless prominent markings on the front.  If there was a commercial featuring these cards, chances are Sarah McLaughlin would be singing in the background...

If no one claims them here, I'll have to try and work my magic on the TCDB. (I don't think I'll try with the '61 cards though - it's a little tough trading poor quality like that.) If there are no takers, I'll pull what remains of the baseball cards and add them to my collection. Basketball isn't my jam, so they could potentially remain in the stack.

Want any of them? Any older card will do!

Repack Haiku #290 (Jerry Reed)

In nineteen ninety,
When the season was over,
Pitched for Pelicans

1989 Donruss #657 Jerry Reed

Reed was released by the Red Sox in August 1990, which would end up being the end of his Major League career. That off-season, at the age of 35, he joined the Senior Professional League. He pitched in 4 games for the St. Petersburg Pelicans before the league folded before mid-season.

Time Travel Trading Update #73

Get cozy, because we're going to be here for awhile. We're charging into the new year with the biggest update yet, thanks to 11 trades featuring over 150 cards! I can feel it - this is going to be an incredible year!

We'll kick things off with a trade that was pending as of the last update, courtesy of the famous Greg (Night Owl Cards). Greg snagged a quartet of cards (the post of which also shows off the card he won for being the 200th Time Travel Trade), and sent back a nice variety of cards:

Another pending trade comes from TCDB memeber JF. This was a good sized trade with a Canadian who has time traveled with us before. Admittedly a good amount of cards from the "overproduction era", but don't overlook that sweet vintage hockey card!

Trade #3 Jeff (Wax Pack Wonders) did something I never thought would happen - he traded back for cards he himself had previously sent me! I love the reason too - a Hall Of Famer frankenset! That works for me, because I got some great vintage and reprints from the deal!

For the 2nd straight month, I completed a trade with Ken through the TCDB. This return consisted of mostly 1950's cards. Is it me or could Cole and Oravets pass as brothers?

Sometimes I'm just overwhelmed by the generosity of my fellow collectors. Greg (The Collective Mind) joined the fray with his first Time Travel Trade. I sent him 3 cards. he sent me a lot of cards from the 1970 set:

Bo (Baseball Cards Come To Life!) checks in with his monthly trade. Thanks to him, the 1975 Topps set gets a nice little boost:

On the TCDB, I keep the Time Travel cards in a separate collection from my personal collection.  Unfortunately, the web site doesn't distinguish between these collections when someone is looking at cards marked for trade. Occasionally I'll get someone who offers something from my want lists (personal collection) in exchange for something on my trade lists (Time Travel project). Such was the case with a trader named Chris, who requested a 2019 Derek Jeter card I had in the stack and offered two cards from my want list:

Obviously I made the trade, but since I wanted to keep these cards I made a Time Travel Trade with myself. Instead of Sano and Bell, I'm adding these cards to the project:

Mike was another TCDB member who offered up personal wants for Time Travel cards, but since he wanted vintage I made a counter-offer. Fortunately he had older vintage on his For Trade list, and after explaining the project a deal was struck for these cards:

Long time blog reader Ken emailed me and claimed 31 cards! That establishes a new high for most cards ever mailed out in a Time Travel trade. He also obliterated the record for cards received, sending in a generous but insane 61 cards!

We start out with a sizable lot of last year's Heritage set:

Along with some great vintage:

And finishing up with a bunch of football cards:

Between this and the 1970 Topps lot, the stack has generously grown to over 600 cards! To think, this all started with a 12 card pack of 2018 Topps!

It seems only fitting that the last featured trade from this epic post circles back to the lead-off hitter, Greg (Night Owl Cards). His latest trade (which also happens to be his 20th Time Travel trade!) features a trio of 70's cards, including a few Buffalo Bills:

You have to love that Mario Clark card - there just aren't enough cards depicting athletes keeping themselves hydrated!

Whew! There you have it, so many great new cards. My eternal thanks to all of my trade partners!

As always, these cards are all available in exchange for an older card. You can claim your cards below, or through the TCDB (Kep75). Let's make some trades!

The Time Travel Trading Project is simple in concept. I started out with a random pack of 2018 Topps Series 1 baseball cards. My aim was to trade every card in that pack for something older. Each card I receive in turn is then made available for trade, with the goal to get the oldest card I can get.

Number of trades completed: 223
Unique trading partners: 69

Number of cards mailed out: 1,074
Year of oldest card mailed out: 1910-11

Number of cards received: 1,631
Year of oldest card received: 1890
