Rook led league in hits
Overshadowed by young Bo
And Big Mac's power
Has anyone had a more underrated rookie season than Kevin Seitzer? While all the headlines were going to his fellow rookie teammate Bo Jackson, he surprisingly led the entire American League in hits with 207. That got him second place in Rookie Of The Year voting, behind Mark McGwire's historic season.
There were so many good rookie cards to chase in 1987... it's not surprising that some players were overshadowed by others. I remember treasuring my copy of Seitzer's 1987 Fleer rookie (pictured with someone else) card. That card was right up there with Bo, Wally, Barry, and Will.

ReplyDeleteI did not know this. It looks like he ended up having a pretty solid career too. Better than Bo's, and certainly less controversial than McGwire's.
