How About A Game Of Catch, Son?

This Sunday is Father's Day. As a father of four, I'm looking forward to a little extra attention on that day. A couple of years ago, I did a Father's Day post listing all of the sons of former major league players currently in the MLB. Since this year's Topps Heritage set included a subset of Father and Sons, and I thought it would be a good excuse to update the list.

2025 Topps Heritage
#69 Vladimir/Vladimir Jr. Guerrero (FS)

Did you know there are 32 guys who have played a game this year who are second-generation players? That includes two who made their debut this year - Jack Dreyer and Logan Davidson! Also, we have 3 current players who have dads in the Hall of Fame - Vlad Guerrero Jr., Cavan Biggio, and Will Wagner.

2025 Topps Heritage
#66 Matt/Jackson Holliday (FS)

The Heritage subset only features 5 father-son combos, featuring the two cards above as well as representatives of the Clemens, Biggio, and Baker families. If Topps wanted to really expand on the concept, they have the following pairs to choose from:
  • Clay and Cody Bellinger
  • Dante and Bo Bichette
  • Craig and Cavan Biggio
  • Mike and Daz Cameron
  • Roger and Kody Clemens
  • Jeff and Griffin Conine
  • Mark and Logan Davidson
  • Steve and Jack Dreyer
  • Mike and Tyler Fitzgerald
  • Luis and Luis (Jr.) Garcia
  • Vladimir and Vladimir (Jr.) Guerrero
  • Bryan and Hunter Harvey
  • Charlie and Ke'Bryan Hayes
  • Matt and Jackson Holliday
  • Kevin and Bryce Jarvis
  • Al and Jack Leiter
  • Mark and Mark (Jr.) Leiter
  • Sandy and Angel Martinez
  • Lance and Lance (Jr.) McCullers
  • Brian and Hoby Milner
  • Stu and Joc Pederson
  • Geronimo and Jeremy Pena
  • Paul and Cal Quantrill
  • Larry and Gavin Sheets
  • Steve and Tyler Soderstrom
  • Fernando and Fernando (Jr.) Tatis
  • Brian and Brice Turang
  • Gary and Daulton Varsho
  • Billy and Will Wagner
  • David and Ryan Weathers
  • Jack and Jacob Wilson
  • Bobby and Bobby (Jr.) Witt
Plus their are a good number of players who played last year but haven't had a chance to take an MLB at-bat this year, including Dusty Baker's son Darren.

2025 Topps Heritage
#70 Dusty/Darren Baker (FS)

Of course, I'd also have to mention the legendary grandfather-grandson pairing of Carl and Mike Yastrzemski! (Bonus Happy Father's Day to you grandfathers out there!)

2020 Stadium Club #197 Mike Yastrzemski

An early Happy Father's Day to those of you with kids. Enjoy your day gentleman!

Sleuthing My Way To Some Free Cards

"I don't claim to have all the answers, but I know where to find them."

I tell people that a lot. I have been fixing computers for over 20 years, and every time the technology changes, whether it's a new Microsoft Windows or a new hardware standard, chances are I'll run into a problem I haven't seen before. In truth, a good chunk of my job is in researching and finding the solutions that I don't currently have. I'm hardly an expert in researching, but I do alright. I can find answers when I need to.

This gift of sleuthing paid off for me recently. One of the more prominent members of the TCDB community, Dan, had a little contest on the forums. For 10 days, he used a site feature to randomly pick a card from his collection. He then described the card, giving as much detail as he wanted, and tasked others to name the card. Get all 10 right, and win a prize! All but one of the cards was baseball, so I was able to figure out the set based on the graphical elements easy enough, but from there I had to actually look through the sets to find exact card that matched Dan's descriptions. It wasn't easy, but I don't think it took me more than 15 minutes to find any one card.

In the end, I was among a small group who got all 10 cards correct, and received a PWE for my efforts. I'll start with the batch of cards from Topps' trippy 1995 DIII set:

I really like the Conlon Collection set, and will pick up any cards of those when I can cheaply, so I was happy to add this trio as well:

Rounding out with a mix of other cards:

That Dykstra is the the first card printed on a steel plate that I own, and that Aurillia is a Keebler food issue I had never seen before.

Favorite Card: I love the uniform on the Jim Scott card!

Thanks for the contest Dan! It was a fun diversion from the normal sleuthing I do!

Top 5 Hall Of Fame - Todd Helton

The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies happen this weekend, and four new members will officially be welcomed to the legendary museum. Today, I honor Todd Helton. Helton is one of those players whose career occurred at a time that I wasn't collecting, so I only own a single card of his. So, I filled in the rest of my Top 5 with a sample of cards that I enjoy.

1999 Topps #52 (ASR)

This has to be one of the all-time great Rookie Cup cards, doesn't it? How often to you get candid shots of a player waiting around trying to stay dry during a rain delay? Helton took over first base for Colorado in 1998, and led all rookies in either league in most of the major offensive categories. He would have been a slam dunk choice for Rookie of the Year if it had not been for the historic season by Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood.

2001 Upper Deck Victory #532

This is the only card I own of his. When this card came out, Helton was coming off an amazing 2000 season that resulted in a Top 5 MVP finish as well as the first of 5 straight All-Star selections and 4 straight Silver Slugger awards.

2003 Stadium Club #59

In addition to being a great hitter, Helton was regularly regarded as one of the best fielding first baseman in the Majors. He won 3 Gold Gloves over the course of his career.

2014 Topps #253 (BH, CL)

Technically, I once owned this card too. It was part of the Time Travel Trading stack and has since moved on. Helton announced his retirement in 2013, an impressive 5 years after he was diagnosed with a degenerative back condition. He is one of only 11 retired players in Major League history with at least a .300/.400/.500 AVE/OBP/SLG slash line and 350 home runs.

2019 Topps Update

- 150 Years of Professional Baseball

#150-42

Let's talk about that 2000 season again, because it truly was something special. He won his first and only batting title, and also led the National League in hits, OBP, SLG (and thusly OPS), doubles, RBI, extra base hits, and total bases. Only hits and OBP didn't lead the Majors. He became the 11th player in MLB history to surpass 100 extra base hits, only the second time that happened since 1948. (Fun fact: In 2001, that mark was surpassed 4 more times, including by Helton again, but has not been done since!) Despite all this, Helton only finished 5th in the MVP race, thanks to the Rockies's 4th place finish and the stigma of the "thin Colorado air".

Valley League Alum In The Majors (2024)

On May 27th, the Shenandoah Valley Baseball League kicked off the 2024 season. The SVBL is a local summer collegiate baseball league that has been around since 1897.  Hundreds of players who have played in this league have gone on to play in the Majors. I'll try and go to a few games each year in support of my hometown team, the Waynesboro Generals. Last year, I thought it would be fun to look at some of the league's alumni playing in the Majors. Why not do it again this year? As far as I can tell, there are currently 14 former SVBL players who have appeared in a Major League game so far this year.

Austin Adams, Athletics

(2011 Staunton Braves)

2020 Topps Total #802 Austin Adams

Adams is in his 8th Major League season, having debuted in 2017 with the Washington Nationals. After stops in Seattle, San Diego and Arizona, he's become a valuable member of the Oakland bullpen this year.

Graham Ashcraft, Reds

(2018 Waynesboro Generals)

2023 Topps #214 Graham Ashcraft (RC)

Ashcraft is one of two current players who have played for my hometown team, the Waynesboro Generals. He is among the stable of exciting young players that have started coming up through the Reds' system.

Dominic Canzone, Mariners

(2017 Front Royal Cardinals)

2024 Topps #195 Dominc Canzone (RC)

Canzone debuted last year with Arizona, and was later traded to Seattle in the deal that sent closer Paul Sewald to the Diamondbacks.

Chris Devenski, Rays

(2011 Woodstock River Bandits)

2020 Topps Heritage #651 Chris Devenski

Devenski was once one of the top relievers in baseball, making the 2017 All-Star team as a member of  the eventual World Series Champion Houston Astros. Arm injuries limited him to just 25 games between 2020-2022. Healthy again, he is now a member of the Rays' bullpen.

Brendan Donovan, Cardinals

(2016 New Market Rebels)

2024 Topps #7 Brendan Donovan

Donovan's name is etched in history as the National League's first ever winner of the Gold Glove at the  Utility position. He has primarily played LF for the Cardinals this year, with some appearances at 2B and 3B as well.

Reed Garrett, Mets

(2013 New Market Rebels)

2023 Choice Norfolk Tides
#13 Reed Garrett

Garrett is having a career year so far with the Mets, already establishing career highs in appearances and innings pitched.  He is currently among the league leaders in wins for relievers.

Austin Gomber, Rockies

(2012 Luray Wranglers)

2024 Topps #340 Austin Gomber

Gomber has been a part of the Rockies' rotation for the past four years. He was one of the players the Rockies received from St. Louis in exchange for Nolan Arenado.

Romy Gonzalez, Red Sox

(2016 Staunton Braves)

2024 Topps Chicago White Sox
#CWS-9 Romy Gonzalez

Gonzalez is now a bench/utility player for the Red Sox, having been selected off waivers this past January. He made his debut as a September call-up in 2021. He is currently on the IL with a hamstring strain.

Wyatt Langford, Rangers

(2021 Charlottesville Tom Sox)

2024 Topps Now #12 Wyatt Langford

Langford was the fourth overall pick in last year's draft, and remarkably played his way to the Opening Day roster this season.

Connor Norby, Orioles

(2019 Waynesboro Generals)

2023 Panini Chronicles - Vertex
#26 Connor Norby

Norby becomes the latest alum to make his Major League debut, playing his first game on June 3rd. He hit his first home run the next day.

Emilio Pagan, Reds

(2010 Harrisonburg Turks)

2023 Topps Heritage
#415 Emilio Pagan (SP)

Pagan is a successful reliever who has appeared in almost 400 games since he reached the Majors in 2017. He has played for 6 teams, and is currently a member of the Cincinati Reds.

Vinnie Pasquantino, Royals

(2017 Charlottesville Tom Sox)

2024 Topps Heritage
#365 Vinnie Pasquantino

Pasquantino's nickname is "The Italian Nightmare". He was a member of Team Italy during the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Nate Pearson, Blue Jays

(2016 Staunton Braves)

2022 Topps - Oversized 1987 Topps
Future Stars Box Topper
#87FS-18 Nate Pearson

Pearson was a 1st Round draft pick for Toronto in 2017. His rookie debut came during the COVID-shortened 2020 season. His first game was a "home" game in Washington D.C. against Max Scherzer. (COVID restrictions forced the Blue Jays to play all of their games stateside, and their AAA Stadium in Buffalo wasn't ready yet, so they played the Nationals as the home team in D.C.)

Ryan Yarbrough, Dodgers

(2012 Luray Wranglers)

2023 Topps Update #US87
Ryan Yarbrough

Last year, Yarbrough suffered multiple fractures when a 106 mph line drive struck him in the head. He recovered nicely and is currently one of the Dodger's better relievers.

TCDB Trade Recap: Cards From Pierre, SD

Have you ever had a card that you saw so many times online that you swore you had it, only to find out you didn't? For the life of me, I swore I had almost all of the Red Sox related cards from the awesome Pinnacle subset "Idols". Turns out I didn't have any of them!  While trading away some spare 2023 Topps base to TCDB member named James, I made sure I knocked two of those off the old list.

Idols is such a fantastic idea for a subset. It gives the fans a glimpse into the people who inspired the players we followed. Where else would you find Jackie Gleason, Malcolm X, or Mike Bossy in a baseball card set?

Favorite Card: If you couldn't tell, I'm a fan of those Idols. However, I just got to give a shout out to that Bartolo Colon rookie card!

Thanks for the cards James!

TCDB Trade Recap: Cards From Portland, OR

I think I'm done buying packs of 2024 Series 1. I have enough of the cards (and enough doubles) that if I wanted to I could probably complete it through trades. When a TCDB member named Erick posted he was looking for some as well, I looked through what I had and we ended up making a trade.

As of now, I'm not going to add the cards I need to my want lists (except for the 5 Red Sox cards I still need!) I'll just pick up what I can casually and maybe I'll motivate myself into finishing it before Series 2 comes out.

Favorite Card: While it's always good to have a Red Sox player posed in front of the Fenway scoreboard, I can't help but appreciate the dirt and emotion on the card of Yaz's grandson.

Thanks for the trade Erick!

Time Travel Trading Update #88

Only 3 trades this past month, which means we are incredibly close to Trade #300. Remember, if you are my 300th Time Travel Trade partner, you get your pick of any card from the stack for free! I can almost guarantee that I'll have a winner before the next update, so if you've been waiting for just the right moment to make a Time Travel Trade, this is it! Let's see if any of these new additions will be part of that historic trade:

I'm starting things off with a single card from a TCDB member named Johnny. Our trade was actually bigger, but mostly cards outside of the project. Here's a card commemorating the inaugural season of the expansion Colorado Rockies.

Man, I remember watching the expansion draft on TV back then. That was over 30 years ago. I feel old.

Next up is the monthly offering from Bo (Baseball Cards Come To Life!). Bo picked up a variety of cards - vintage, junk wax, and modern! In return I got a lot of 80's star power, a great vintage Giant, and some old guy I had never heard of before.

In all honesty, that 1935 Lord Trenchard is a pretty cool looking card. Gotta love a man in uniform! Now if I can just find someone who collects pre-WWII non-sports cards to take some of these older cards off my hands...

Finally, we have my regular trade with Brendan (The View From The Third Floor). He picked up a quintet of cards this go-around, and sent back a bunch of starts from the overproduction era, including a Neon Deion rookie card!

I always liked the sheer classiness of the Sandberg card!

As always, a hearty thanks to my trade partners. It's time to make some trades, and who knows, maybe lucky #300 will be you!

As always, these cards are all available in exchange for an older card. You can claim your cards below, or through the TCDB (Kep75). Let's make some trades!

The Time Travel Trading Project is simple in concept. I started out with a random pack of 2018 Topps Series 1 baseball cards. My aim was to trade every card in that pack for something older. Each card I receive in turn is then made available for trade, with the goal to get the oldest card I can get.

Number of trades completed: 297
Unique trading partners: 74

Number of cards mailed out: 1,616
Year of oldest card mailed out: 1910-11

Number of cards received: 2,365
Year of oldest card received: 1890
