Catching Up

I'm back! Did you miss me? Alright, first things first - my wife is doing excellent! The surgery went smoothly and she was home the following day. The pathology report came back clean, meaning the cancer didn't spread past her uterus. She's feeling a lot better too, even though she is still under some restrictions and has to be careful not to overdo anything. Everything is trending it the right direction! I appreciate all the kind thought and words from you guys. It meant a lot!

Now that I'm back to blogging, I decide to wrap up a whole bunch of incoming cards that have been sitting around waiting for their moment in the sun. My camera roll needed a bit of a photo dump.

Back in February, Jeff (Wax Pack Wonders) included a bonus card in one of our Time Travel Trading dealings:

Kerry Wood's historic rookie season made this a sought after card back in 1998. As far as multiplayer rookie cards go, this one was pretty good, as all three pitchers eventually made the All-Star team.

I also got some free cards recently from Stuart (S.R. '75 Cards). He was kind enough to help with my 1977 Topps set build, as well as add a few Red Sox needs my way:

Bob Boone giving us that smoldering look that drove all the ladies wild...

Next, a TCDB trade with Kurt from Butler, PA. I was able to acquire two more Red Sox from the 1976 set, leaving me just 3 short of the team collection!

That Fred Lynn was one of the bigger cards remaining from my quest to obtain all the Red Sox cards from the 1975-current Topps base sets.

Last but not least, Greg (Night Owl Cards) was kind enough to send a couple of Red Sox cards along with his most recent Time Travel Trade (which is set for Monday!)

I'm not a huge fan of parallels, but the tree border does add a nice subtle touch to the holiday set.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming!

Trapped In Time: Remnants Of The 186th - 190th Trades

Six more cards destined to leave the Time Travel Trade stack, one way or another...

Trade #186 - No Remnants!

Trade #187 - No Remnants!

Trade #188 Brendan (The View From The Third Floor)
Traded 07/27/22: 1970 Topps #252 Lowell Palmer (RC), 1970 Topps #457 Rico Petrocelli (AS), 1972 Topps #250 Boog Powell, 1982 Donruss #239 Dwayne Murphy, 2009 Team Zone AFL Team (Austrlian football) #50 Dale Morris, 2009 Team Zone AFL Team (Austrlian football) #148 Jason Akermanis

Received 08/12/22:
  • 2018 Donruss Optic - Pink #148 Adrian Beltre (See Trade #194)
  • 2018 Donruss Optic - Shock #148 Adrian Beltre (See Trade #194)
  • 2007 Topps Turkey Red #169 Justin Verlander (See Trade #194)
  • 1997 Fleer #522 Jorge Posada (ROO) (See Trade #194)
  • 1990 Topps #7 Rickey Henderson (RB)
  • 1981 Donruss #475 Tim Stoddard
  • 1970 Topps #245 Leo Cardenas
  • 1969 Topps #328 Joe Horlen (See Trade #220)
  • 1969 Topps #383 Casey Cox

I'm amused that from this trade with Brendan (The View From The Third Floor), what's left in a single card from 4 straight decades. I'm a little surprised a Hall of Famer lasted this long, even if it is a card from the "overproduction era".

Trade #189(Personal collection swap)
Added to My Personal Collection 08/21/22: 1976 Topps #196 1975 AL RBI Leaders (Scott/Mayberry/Lynn), 1981 Donruss #215 Jerry Remy, 1990 Score #3 Dwight Evans, 2005 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia #49 Edgar Renteria, 2022 Topps Opening Day - Triple Play #TPC-7A/7B/7C Bogaerts/Devers/Verdugo

Added to the Time Travel Trading Stack 08/21/22:
  • 2002 Fleer Maximum #82 Dante Bichette
  • 1997 Upper Deck #13 Mark Lemke (See Trade #314)
  • 1987 Sportflics #111 Best In Baseball AL Pitchers (Clemens/Higuera/Morris) (See trade #204)
  • 1976 Topps #523 Bob Montgomery (See Trade #375)
  • 1974 Topps #192 Mario Guerrero

Well, I guess a couple of Red Sox from my doubles box will return from whence they came, unless someone happens to need a card of Bo's dad or a slightly beat up 70's middle infielder.

Trade #190 - No Remnants!

These cards have languished in the trade vortex for almost 4 years. There time is up, and it's officially last call. Any takers?

Playing In the Snow

By now, most of us have had there fill of snow and winter in general. We're ready for Spring, and with it the start of a new baseball season.

Still, there's just something about playing in the snow. When Tom (Batting Out Of Order) offered up some Uno football cards, I couldn't help but claim one card in particular:

Although I am a Bills fan, I'm not really a football card collector. But how could I pass up this fantastic photo of superstar quarterback Josh Allen doing what he does best and making things happen for the team. It's a beautiful shot of one of the more memorable moments from the season.

Amazing. Tom was also kind enough to send a few extra cards too:

Three more down just seven to go to complete this Glossy All-Star insert set!

Thanks for the cards Tom!

Trapped In Time: Remanats Of Trades #171 - 180

I'm doing something different this time. Instead of listing the remnants for the next 5 trades, I'm listing the next 10. The reason is simple: The next 5 trades just have a single card left over. That's great, it means cards were claimed and traded for, but for the purposes of this post it's a bit boring. By expanding to the next group of 5 we have 11 cards on the project chopping block instead. Let's see whose time in the Time Travel Trading stack is drawing to a close...

Trade #171 - No Remnants!
Trade #172 - No Remnants!
Trade #173 - No Remnants!
Trade #174 - No Remnants!

Trade #175(Personal collection swap)
Added to My Personal Collection 06/17/22: 2022 Bowman #29 Bobby Dalbec, 2020 Bowman Chrome - Prospects #BCP-161 Noah Song, 2018 Topps - Gold #129 Chris Sale (LL) (SN2018), 2013 Topps #279 Vincente Padilla, 2007 Topps #264 David Murphy (RC), 1975 Topps #612 Terry Hughes, 1970 Topps #540 Gary Peters

Added to the Time Travel Trading Stack 06/17/22:
  • 2017 Topps - MLB Award Winners #CYA-1 Rick Porcello
  • 2015 Topps (football) #138 De'Anthony Thomas (See Trade #184)
  • 2010 Bowman Chrome #86 B.J. Upton (See Trade #184)
  • 2009 Topps - Gold #177 Eric Hinske (See Trade #184)
  • 2004 Bowman Heritage #289 Marland Williams (See Trade #225)
  • 1971 Topps #105 Tony Conigliaro (See Trade #228)
  • 1958 Topps (football) #3 Joe Schmidt (See Trade #287)

Wow. hard to believe this card is 9 years old already. Porcello appeared on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time this past election, and was an obvious "one and done" candidate. Porcello might be the last pitcher to earn a Cy Young based on a gaudy win total. (Seriously, even as a Red So fan I'm amazed he beat out Verlander!)

Trade #176 Brendan (The View From The Third Floor)
Traded 06/24/22: 1979 Topps (football) #325 Roger Carr, 1981 Fleer #2 Larry Bowa

Received 06/26/22:
  • 2022 Topps Opening Day - Opening Day #OD-6 Colorado Rockies (See Trade #184)
  • 2022 Topps Opening Day - Opening Day #OD-7 San Diego Padres (See Trade #184)
  • 2022 Topps Opening Day - Opening Day #OD-10 Miami Marlins (See Trade #184)
  • 2022 Topps Opening Day - Opening Day #OD-14 Boston Red Sox (See Trade #233)
  • 2022 Topps Opening Day - Triple Play #TPC-3A/3B/3C Bellinger/Betts/Kershaw (See Trade #184)
  • 2022 Topps Opening Day - Triple Play #TPC-7A/7B/7C Bogaerts/Devers/Verdugo (See Trade #189)
  • 2022 Topps Opening Day - Triple Play #TPC-8A/8B/8C Hosmer/Machado/Tatis (See Trade #184)
  • 2022 Topps Opening Day - Triple Play #TPC-9A/9B/9C Jimenez/Robert/Abreu (See Trade #184)
  • 2021 Topps #220 Marcel Ozuna (LL) (See Trade #184)
  • 2021 Topps #312 Marcel Ozuna (LL) (See Trade #233)
  • 1981 Donruss #29 John Mayberry (See Trade #240)
  • 1981 Donruss #180 Rudy Law
  • 1981 Donruss #375 Don Robinson
  • 1979 Topps #51 Ray Fosse
  • 1978 Topps #480 Ron LeFlore

There's some great cards here! A classic bunting shot, one of the greatest hitting pitchers in history, the man Pete Rose crushed at home plate, and one of the greatest prison redemption stories around!

Trade #177 Jeff (Wax Pack Wonders)
Traded 06/24/22: 2017 Stadium Club #31 Salvador Perez, 2021 Topps #2 Roberto Osuna, 2021 Topps #178 Albert Pujols, 2021 Topps Big League #286 Los Angeles Dodgers (HL)

Received 06/26/22:
  • 1994 Topps Archives 1954 #23 Luke Easter (See Trade #184)
  • 1994 Topps Archives 1954 #59 Gene Conley (See Trade #184)
  • 1994 Topps Archives 1954 #105 Andy Carey (See Trade #255)
  • 1994 Topps Archives 1954 #153 Rube Walker (See Trade #255)
  • 1994 Topps Archives 1954 #211 Don Hoak (See Trade #184)
  • 1982-85 Galasso Baseball Hobby Card Report T-206 Reprints #NNO George Browne
  • 1982-85 Galasso Baseball Hobby Card Report T-206 Reprints #NNO George McQuillan
  • 1982-85 Galasso Baseball Hobby Card Report T-206 Reprints #NNO Dolly Stark

I never know how well reprints will do in the trade stack, but I'm surprised these reprints of tobacco cards didn't generate any interest. Fun Fact: Did you know that there's just 21 cards listed on the TCDB featuring the San Antonio Bronchos team? Owning that Dolly Stark would automatically put you among the top collectors for a minor league team that hasn't existed since 1919!

Trade #178- No Remnants

Traded 06/24/22: 1959 Topps #424 Ken Aspromonte, 1970 Topps #38 Mack Jones

Received 07/11/22:
  • 1961 Topps #318 Danny O'Connell (See Trade #184)
  • 1924 Imperial Tobacco Co. of Canada (ITC) Dogs Series #4 Otter-Hound

Maybe the reason it was hard to trade reprints of tobacco cards was because I have actual tobacco cards in the stack? I was able to make a trade last month for one thanks to a 5 for 1 offer, so let's try it again! If anyone trades me a card older than this 1924 Otter-Hound, you can take 4 more cards from the trade stack. Any takers?

Traded 06/24/22: 1983 Donruss #240 Doug Flynn, 1998 Pinnacle Performers #37 Gary Sheffield, 1998 Pinnacle Performers #52 Charles Johnson, 1998 Pinnacle Performers #87 Bobby Bonilla

Received 07/14/22:
  • 1995 Flair #354 Charles Johnson (See Trade #233)
  • 1994 Finest #153 Roberto Mejia (See Trade #184)
  • 1994 Finest #413 Mark Portugal
  • 1978 Topps #137 Craig Kusick

The last two cards for today feature two very different cards when it comes to look and feel. Whether you prefer shiny or classic, there's a card for everyone!

You know the drill! Any card older than what I'm sending out! Claim them now before they get removed from the Time Travel Trade stack!

The All Cooking Team

Any of my readers listen to baseball podcasts?

One of my favorite sports writers, the legendary Tim Kurkijan does a podcast with his son Jeff called  "Is This a Great Game or What?" Kurkijan always has great stories about the game, and is a wealth of knowledge.

One of the fun things they occasionally do on their podcast is come up with a lineup based on players that fit a certain theme. I thought it would be a fun post to take one of those lineups and add some cardboard and commentary to it.

Tim and Jeff's "All Cooking Team" is filled with some humorous homophones of both well and lesser known players. The rule is they can't use the same surname more than once unless it is spelled differently. Here's who they came up with:

Catcher -  Eric Fryer

2011 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects
#36 Eric Fryer (RC)

Fryer played 7 seasons in the MLB. He is one of those rare players that switched teams during a series where both teams were playing each other. All he had to do was walk across the field to the opposite dugout and meet his new team!

1st Baseman -  Seth Brown

2024 Topps #79 Seth Brown

Brown is one of a surprising number of current players to make this list. He signed a minor league contract with the Yankees last month.

2nd Baseman -  Eduoard Julien

2023 Topps Heritage #589 Edouard Julien (RC)

Julien is with the Rockies now. He'll be suiting up for Team Canada in this year's World Baseball Classic.

Shortstop -  Jeff Frye

1997 Donruss #241 Jeff Frye

Frye was a utility infielder who spent most of his career with the Rangers and Red Sox. He later became a sports agent.

3rd Baseman -  Cliff Cook

1962 Topps #41 Cliff Cook (RS)

Cook played 5 years for the Reds and Mets. He was once traded for Don Zimmer.

Outfielder - Buzz Boyle

1972 TCMA The 1930's
#94 Ralph Boyle

Boyle played for the Boston Braves and Brooklyn Dodgers. he later became the manager of the Muskegon Lassies of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1946.

Outfielder - Dusty Baker

1981 Topps #495 Dusty Baker

Well, if the All-Cooking team needed a manager, you couldn't ask for a better one than a 3-time Manager of the Year. He was pretty good in the outfield too!

Outfielder - Bake McBride

1982 Topps #745 Bake McBride

The only member of the team not chosen for his surname, McBride was a fast but often injured outfielder who won a World Series with Philadelphia in 1980.

Designated Hitter - David Fry

2024 Topps Heritage
#654 David Fry (RC)

Fry fits the Kurkijans' rules since his last name is spelled differently than shortstop Jeff Frye. Fry was an All-Star in 2024, but last season was an injury filled one that ended prematurely after being hit in the face by a Tarik Skubal pitch.

Pitcher - Max Fried

2021 Topps #9 Max Fried

The All-Cooking Team has an ace with 3x All-Star Max Fried. Fried led the league in wins last year.

Pitcher - Austin Kitchen

2025 Topps Update
#US320 Austin Kitchen (RC)

Kitchen made his debut with the Marlins in 2024, pitching in 4 games. He's currently trying to make his way back to the big leagues with Seattle.

Pitcher - Steve Grilli

1977 Topps #506 Steve Grilli

Grilli's claim to fame is being the losing pitcher in the longest professional baseball game in history. He is also the only member of the All-Cooking team to open up his own bar after his MLB career concluded.

Pitcher - Tom Butters

1965 Topps #246 Tom Butters

Butters' Major League career may have not been noteworthy, but afterwards he became the athletic director of Duke University and is the man responsible for hiring the winningest basketball coach in Division I history, Mike Krzyzewski.

Pitcher - JP Sears

2025 Topps Heritage #647 JP Sears

Sears was traded from the Athletics to the Padres in the same deal that netted the Padres All-Star closer Mason Miller.

Of course, after hearing this list, I had to think of some others who could have made the list.  Here's who I thought of:

Corbin Burnes

2022 Stadium Club #129 Corbin Burnes

Although burns are not something you want while cooking, having a former Cy Young winner would be a big boost to the All-Cooking team!

Woodie Fryman

1977 Topps #28 Woodie Fryman

The team could also use a two time All-Star and Expos' Hall of Famer!

Pepper Martin

1992 Conlon Collection TSN
#637 Pepper Martin

A member of the famous "Gashouse Gang", our team could use a little seasoning!

Jonah Tong

2025 Topps Now #628 Jonah Tong

I tried to think of a good kitchen utensil-style name, and settled on this young Mets pitcher with a bright future!

It's your turn now! Can you think of any other cooking-related players?

Trapped In Time: Remnants Of The 166th - 170th Trades

This is a first! There are more cards listed as remnants today then card that were posted on Monday's Time Travel Trading update! That's one way to clear space in the box I guess. There's a ton of vintage on the block today, including a pre-WWII card that is awesome and could net someone some extra cards! Let's see who has been in the stack for over 3 years...

Trade #166 Ken (Blog Reader)

  • 1960 Topps #548 Don Mincher (RC) (See Trade #201)
  • 1959 Topps #132 Don Lee (RS)

38 cards in this trade, and only 4 remain! The Ray Sadecki card holds a special distinction as a Time Travel Trading card that was traded but eventually cam back later! I traded it to Ken back in 2019, and then 3 years later he sent back again. It's been with me ever since! Anyone else want to trade for it then send it back sometime in the future? This could be a thing!

Trade #167 Bo (Baseball Cards Come To Life!)

  • 1961 Topps #166 Danny Kravitz (See Trade #254)
  • 1959 Topps #9 Paul Giel (See Trade #201)

Poor Larry Jackson. Another good sized trade from Bo (Baseball Cards Come To Life!), and he is the only one remaining. Is it because his name is too plain? Is it because his sleeves are too short for his arms? Does he just not look good in canvas? Poor guy deserves better!

Trade #168 Brendan Hart (The View From The Third Floor)
Traded 05/25/22: 1971 Topps (football) #108 Dan Sullivan (RC), 1974 Topps (football) #523 Charlie Smith, 1975 Topps (football) #498 John Rowser, 1976 Topps (football) #303 Dick Himes (RC), 1979 Topps (football) #298 Ron Yary

Received 05/27/22:
  • 2021 Topps #2 Roberto Osuna (See Trade #177)
  • 2021 Topps #178 Albert Pujols (See Trade #177)
  • 2021 Topps Big League #286 Los Angeles Dodgers (HL) (See Trade #177)
  • 1979 Topps #255 Tommy John (See Trade #376)
  • 1978 Topps #383 Mario Mendoza
  • 1974 Topps #237 Ken Brett
  • 1974 Topps #511 Toby Harrah
  • 1973 Topps #85 Ted Simmons (See Trade #196)
  • 1968 Topps #53 Gene Alley

Three Pirates and a man with a palindrome for a last name! These cards from Brendan (The View From The Third Floor) deserve some love! I must say it's kind of cool seeing three different styles of headgear for one team. Did the Pirates actually wear all yellow caps like Ken Brett is wearing or is that particularly bad airbrushing?

Another big one from Bo! A couple of newer cards to break up the string of vintage, including a Hideo Nomo that may have slipped by Night Owl due to the "Traded To Mets" stamp on it.

Finally, we have a card from 1925! In the past, I've elected to keep pre-WWII cards in the Time Travel Trading Project just as record of how far back I've been able to go. Plus, these cards don't really fit my collection. It's highly unlikely that this card will get traded, but I'm going to try by making an offer: If anyone has a card older than 1925 that they are willing to part with in exchange for this card, they can take any 4 additional cards from the Time Travel trade stack. It's a 5-for-1 deal just to keep pushing the limits of time travel! Who's game?

With the exception of the Whippet Racing card, all of these cards will be retired and added to my personal collection unless someone is willing to trade for them in exchange for an older card. Their future is in your hands!

Time Travel Trading Update #108

For many of us, this is one of the busiest weeks of the year. I count myself among them, and yet I dug deep to get out the latest update to the Time Travel Trading Project! Fortunately (unfortunately?), there not a lot of trades to show off - just 3 this time, with multiple still pending for next time. Let's deck the halls with some cards, shall we?

We start things off with a TCDB trade with former blogger Tom. I don't follow basketball personally, but seeing the cards Tom sent reminded me that the season is in full swing now. Hopefully that'll get some people in the mood to trade for them. If not, there still some great vintage baseball to be had!

Milestone alert! Bo (Baseball Cards Come to Life!) and I have officially completed our 70th Time Travel Trade! That's over 5 years of monthly trades from Bo! I always find it funny when different trades feature the same player, in this case Darrell Evans shows up in both Tom and Bo's offerings.

Our last one of the day comes from Brendan (The View From The Third Floor). Lots of fun stuff in this trade, especially if you like Combo Cards!

My thanks once again to these three regular trade partners!  May there be cardboard aplenty under your tree Thursday morning!

As always, these cards are all available in exchange for an older card. You can claim your cards below, or through the TCDB (Kep75). Let's make some trades!

The Time Travel Trading Project is simple in concept. I started out with a random pack of 2018 Topps Series 1 baseball cards. My aim was to trade every card in that pack for something older. Each card I receive in turn is then made available for trade, with the goal to get the oldest card I can get.

Number of trades completed: 408
Unique trading partners: 90

Number of cards mailed out: 2,139
Year of oldest card mailed out: 1910-11

Number of cards received: 3,106
Year of oldest card received: 1890
