TCDB Trade Recap: Cards From Gastonia , NC

Cards continue to be sparse at my local retail outlets, so I've been working on getting the 2023 Topps Red Sox cards I need via trade. Thanks to Stephan over at the TCDB, I was able to knock out most of them, plus a couple others:

Favorite Card: The Jimmie Dean Yaz card may be unlicensed, but it's a fantastic card nonetheless!

Thanks Stephan!

Birdie Tebbetts, Birthday Cards, and Big Milestones

Meet Birdie Tebbetts.

I came across Mr. Tebbetts while doing some research (which I'll get to in a bit), and it turns out he's quite an interesting guy
  • An excellent catcher, Tebbetts led the league in assists and runners caught stealing 3 years straight years (1939-1941)
  • He played on 4 All-Star teams, twice representing the American League as the starting catcher.
  • Once was charged with assault and battery during a game in Cleveland when a basket of tomatoes was dropped on him by a Cleveland fan. He ran up and struck the guy, but the charges were later dismissed.
  • Like many players during that time, he spent 3 years in the military. He was a recruiter stationed in Texas, and acted as a player-manager for the Waco Army Flying School's baseball team.
  • Once called some of his teammates, who were making critical remarks about their manager, "a couple of juvenile delinquents and moronic malcontents." The resulting team friction led to his contract getting sold two months later.
  • Despite spending only 4 years with the Red Sox, he was voted by fans in 1969 as the team's all-time best catcher.
  • Played his final game in 1952 at the age of 38, but later admitted he subtracted 5 years when he left college and was actually 43. (Although according to Baseball-Reference, he would have turned 40 in 1952...)
  • A few years later, he was named manager of the Cincinati Redlegs, winning the 1956 Manager of the Year award. Frank Robinson gave him a lot of credit for his development as a hitter.
  • After managing in Cincinati, Milwaukee, and Cleveland, he became a highly regarded scout. Reggie Jackson said it was Tebbetts' scouting reports that helped him hit 3 home runs during Game 6 of the 1977 World Series.
  • He retired in 1997 after spending over 60 years in professional baseball.
  • He finished his MLB career with exactly 1,000 hits.
It's that last bit of trivia that led me to Mr. Tebbetts. You see, what you are reading right now is the 1,000th post here on Diamond Jesters. 1,000 posts! granted, 300 of them are just whimsical little haiku poems, but still. That's quite a milestone for me.

Anyways, as I was approaching the big 1K, I started to think about what I wanted this post to be about. I correlated this milestone with the equivalent of a hitter reaching 1,000 hits. I decided to research and see if any Major League baseball players finished their careers with exactly 1,000 hits. As luck would have it, Birdie was one of a small handful to achieve this distinction.

So here we have a former Red Sox All-Star, the perfect subject of my momentous post. Go figure, I didn't have any cards of him. According to the TCDB, he only has 81 cards, only 13 of which are with him on the Red Sox. (Ironically, the same number of cards he has as a manager, not including buybacks). The above card, from the 2001 Fleer Boston Red Sox 100th Anniversary set, was a natural choice to remedy that problem. So I placed an order at Sportlots.

Of course, I couldn't just order one card, could I? As luck would have it, Mr. Tebbetts and most of the cards I ordered arrived on my birthday, with the rest coming in a few days later.

Among the cards in my Sportlots order were these 1987 Fleer insert cards chronicling the 1986 World Series. Despite the outcome, it was an important moment in Red Sox history, and now I have the complete set!

Speaking of completing sets, I decided it was time to complete another one. After a previous trade left me with needing just 6 more cards for the 1978 Topps set, I took advantage of some good deals to pick up 5 more of the cards. The last card I need, Andre Dawson, was a little pricier than I wanted to spend, but that's OK. I'm sure I'll find a nice copy in my price range in no time!

In addition to Birdie Tebbetts, I picked up a few more cards from that Red Sox specific set. I really should make it a priority to complete this set, and chances are someday I'll just buy the complete set. The Clemens card is from the 1996 Fleer team set. He was the second to last card I needed for that little set, leaving only Jose Canseco. Oh, in case you were curious, the Tebbetts card in this group is not the same one as the one in the first photo. Yep, I bought two - one for me and one for..

...a contest prize!

Yep, 1000 posts seems like a good reason to have a small giveaway. Comment on this post to be entered, and I'll leave the contest open for a week. A randomly selected winner will get not just one of the Birdie Tebbetts, but a pack of 2023 Topps as well (From a hanger box, so I can guarantee you'll get at least the Team Logo Commemorative Patch that come one per box!) If time and motivation permits, maybe I'll dig up some other goodies as well.

Thanks to everyone who's read any of these many, many posts of mine! I have my sights set for 2,000 now!

TCDB Trade Recap: Cards From Pinckney, MI

For as long as I can remember, I've had most of the 1978 Topps set. I've slowly picked up cards here and there, and thanks to this trade with TCDB member John, I'm now down to needing just 6 more cards to complete it. Momentum is building to get this set done! I'm close! (Edit: I'm even closer now - but that's for another blog post!)

Favorite Card: Bill Buckner is a little beat up, but still a great card!

Thanks for the trade, John!

Repack Haiku #300 (Tom Filer)

Streak of twelve straight wins
Over span of seven years
Three different teams

1989 Fleer #185 Tom Filer

Filer won his first game with the Cubs in 1982. The next time he pitched in the Majors was in 1985 with the Blue Jays, where he finished the season 7-0. After battling injuries, he came back again with the Brewers in 1988 and won his first 4 decisions. Equally remarkable: During this streak his team won 19 straight games he started.

Speaking of streaks - 300 Repack Haiku!

6 Degrees Of Raffy (The Gary Pettis Chain)

Earlier this year I resurrected a blog series where I play a variation of the "6 Degrees Of Kevin Bacon" game and connect a random card in my collection to Red Sox All-Star Rafael Devers. Not only am I matching players that have played together, but also those players need to appear in a card set together (it's a lot more difficult when you can't use those journeyman-type players!)  How long will it take me to get to Raffy? Let's find out!

We start with a randomly generated card from my collection:

Random TCDB Card:

1992 Fleer #314 Gary Pettis

I find it ironic that the first two players I randomly get both have last names starting with the same 5 letters (The first being Joe Pettini). If Andy Pettitte comes up next time, I'm going to seriously question the algorith used at the TCDB.

When this card came out, Pettis was coming off a season where he had won his fifth and final Gold Glove. The speedy outfielder averaged over 30 steals per season over the course of his 11 year career.

Taking a look at the other Rangers cards in this set, I settled on a particular 20 year old who would go on to have a very lengthy and Hall of Fame worthy career:

Teammates in the 1992 Fleer set
#314 Gary Pettis
#316 Ivan Rodriguez

In 1992, "Pudge" was in the season of a 21 year career, which is nothing short of remarkable for a catcher. Towards the end of that career, he bounced around teams a lot, but one of those times was a return to Texas, where he got to play with a future member of the Red Sox World Championship team.

Teammates in the 2010 Topps set
#94 Ivan Rodriguez
#90 Ian Kinsler

Kinsler was a Red Sox trade deadline acquisition in 2018, where he provided stability at 2nd base down the stretch. That makes Kinsler our final connection!

Teammates in the 2018 Topps Holiday set
#HWM172 Ian Kinsler
#HWM67 Rafael Devers

Kinsler and Devers earned World Series rings together during that magical 2018 season, making that holiday off-season a merry one indeed!

Degrees of Raffy: 3

Today Is Going To Be A Great Day!

It's Opening Day!

Today all of baseball fandom celebrates a new season of baseball! Every team plays today, and it will be glorious.

It also happens to be Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale's birthday today. He may not be the Opening Day starter this year, but he's looked good and managed to stay healthy so far, so hopefully that good health continues and he has a solid if not excellent season.

This is the latest addition to my Chris Sale collection, a bonus card from TCDB superstar mzenko. (Thanks Mark!)

It also happens to be my birthday, which will be spent eating my traditional birthday dinner (chicken parmesan), followed by my traditional birthday dessert (peanut butter pie), all the while watching as much baseball as I can (thanks to the free subscription of MLB.TV I get from T-Mobile!)

I hope you all have a great day too! Go Red Sox!

Repack Haiku #299 (Darrin Jackson)

One of two runners
Michael Jordan batted in
For exhibition

1992 Pinnacle #207 Darrin Jackson

Back in the days before inter-league play, the Cubs and White Sox would have annual exhibition games against each other. In 1994, the White Sox called upon a rather famous "prospect" to participate. Playing in front of the Wrigley Field crowd, Jordan had two RBI hits, including a game tying double.  An earlier single plated Jackson.

Blog Trade Recap: Cards From Lansing, MI

Back in January, I was contacted by regular blog reader Stuart, who comments under the handle Poison75. He proposed a trade, and ended up sending a lot of Red Sox cards my way! Too many to show off here, so I'll show off a few of my favorites.

A Lot Of 1983 Topps Red Sox

1983 was one of those years where I didn't collect baseball cards, so I don't have many cards from the set, let alone the Red Sox team. Stuart knocked most of what I needed off the list, leaving just Yastrzemski and a certain Hall of Famer's rookie card.

1998 Pacific Revolution - Prime Time Performers
#2 Nomar Garciaparra

This card is a card so ugly it's got charm. That green and white background is hideous, but it is a die-cut featuring the legendary Nomah!

2003 Donruss Diamond Kings
#14 Rickey Henderson

Rickey spent just one season with Boston at the tail end of his career, so it's always cool to see cards of him representing the Red Sox.

2002 Topps 206 - Team 206 Series 2
#T206-25 Pedro Martinez

Here's Pedro in a vintage looking set, squinting at you knowing full well he could strike you out on 3 pitches.

1968 Topps #581 Garry Roggenburk

I never expect vintage in my personal trades, so getting a card of "Double R" Garry Roggenburk was a pleasant surprise.

2002 Upper Deck Vintage #79 Manny Ramirez (TC)

Last but not least we have an excellently framed Tatooine card featuring the one and only Manny Ramirez Manny might not be looking at you, but at least his shadow is waving "Hi!"

Thanks for the trade Stuart!

Trapped In Time - Remnants Of The 33rd Trade

No takers on last month's Viola, so off he goes into my collection.

It's not unusual that when I get a return from a Time Travel trade, a Red Sox card happens to be among them. Quite often, they are cards I don't have, and I'm tempted to keep them. Sometimes I'll make a personal trade and swap them out, while other times I'll roll the dice and keep them in the stack. If they get claimed, I make a mental note that I still need the card, but otherwise I have no regrets. It's trades like this that make it easy to see "why".

  • 1961 Topps #273b 4th Series Checklist (See Trade #46)
  • 1960 Topps #118 Bob Bruce (RC,RS) (See Trade #35)
Sure, I was tempted to keep that Nomar. If I had, would I have received this insanely generous trade from gwhy11? He could have just sent me a single card, but he sent a big stack of cards, filled with Hall of Famers, oddballs, and general cardboard goodness. This one Red Sox card was the springboard for multiple trades, and helped push the Time Travel Trading Project to new heights. And yet, two cards from the 1960's never moved away.

I would say this is your last chance to trade for the Orioles Rookie Stars card, but as luck would have it there is another one still in the stack. This is Henderson's last stand however. If no one want to make an offer of an older card for either of these two, then my relatively small collection of cards from this decade get slightly bigger.

Repack Haiku #298 (Chuck Crim)

Molitor...Yount...Crim?
Joined Brewers' Wall Of Honor
In twenty-fourteen

1990 Donruss #221 Chuck Crim

I'll be the first to admit I never thought of him as one of Milwaukee's all-time greats, but he is among a rather large contingent of players honored by the team.

Time Travel Trading Update #75

After starting this project with a single pack of 2018 Topps, it has become a yearly tradition to add a pack of the newest base set each year. I'll admit I was a little worried that I wasn't going to find any locally this year, but fortunately a Target run proved to be beneficial. I'm proud to add the following cards to the stack:

Our first trade comes via the TCDB. I reached out to a guy named Cody because he had a couple of basketball cards on his want list that were featured recently as Time Travel "remnants". I'm happy to trade basketball for baseball any day:

Next we have a sizable trade from Chris (The Collector). He picked up a nice assortment of cards, and in return he sent cards from each of the four major sports.

Here's some baseball and football:

Here's some hockey and basketball:

Regular blog reader/trade partner Ken has a tendency towards generous returns in our trade. This one was no different, with three dozen football cards coming back to me:

Bo (Baseball Cards Come To Life!) has his own yearly tradition. Whenever I add a pack of the newest base set, he usually hangs back a day or two and trades for any that weren't claimed. So don't wait too long if one of those 2023 cards catch your eye! If fresh cards aren't your thing, perhaps some of the great cards Bo sent from his last trade will pique your interest!

Our last trade of the evening comes from Greg (Night Owl Cards), who sent along this nice quartet of baseball cards:

Over 100 new cards, with 2 more trades still pending. Next month looks like it'll be another good one. Thanks again to all my trade partners!

As always, these cards are all available in exchange for an older card. You can claim your cards below, or through the TCDB (Kep75). Let's make some trades!

The Time Travel Trading Project is simple in concept. I started out with a random pack of 2018 Topps Series 1 baseball cards. My aim was to trade every card in that pack for something older. Each card I receive in turn is then made available for trade, with the goal to get the oldest card I can get.

Number of trades completed: 236 (2 pending)
Unique trading partners: 70

Number of cards mailed out: 1,221
Year of oldest card mailed out: 1910-11

Number of cards received: 1,816
Year of oldest card received: 1890
