Time Travel Trading Update #81

We've got a relatively short update this week - only 3 trades. That doesn't mean the cards are any less impressive though!

We'll start things off with a trio of cards from Jeff (Wax Pack Wonders). He sent an All-Star card featuring a Hall of Fame catcher, plus two great oddballs:

I feel sorry for Brewers collectors. Those Police Dept cards, which were apparently tailored to dozens of different cities, must be a challenge to collect! This particular department wasn't even listed in the TCDB when I went to add it.

My monthly trade with Bo (Baseball Cards Come To Life!) came in next:

As always, there's some great vintage baseball here, along with a lone football card.

Speaking of football, I've noticed that when football season starts up, I see an increase in football cards getting both sent and received. Brendan (The View From The Third Floor) kicks off the new season in earnest with a dozen great 80's cards.

That's all for today, although one more trade is incoming! Thanks as always to the many awesome collectors who help keep this project flourishing!

As always, these cards are all available in exchange for an older card. You can claim your cards below, or through the TCDB (Kep75). Let's make some trades!

The Time Travel Trading Project is simple in concept. I started out with a random pack of 2018 Topps Series 1 baseball cards. My aim was to trade every card in that pack for something older. Each card I receive in turn is then made available for trade, with the goal to get the oldest card I can get.

Number of trades completed: 265
Unique trading partners: 71

Number of cards mailed out: 1,448
Year of oldest card mailed out: 1910-11

Number of cards received: 2,150
Year of oldest card received: 1890

Repack Haiku #323 (Mike Heath)

Lone World Series game:
Ninth inning sub at catcher
For Thurman Munson

1990 Donruss #209 Mike Heath

The only World Series appearance he made over his 14 year career happened during his rookie year with the Yankees in 1978. In Game 5, he took over at catcher in the top of the 9th inning as battery-mate Jim Beattie faced the minimum three batters. His World Series moment lasted all of 5 pitches, but he got a ring out of it!

**********

Apropos of nothing, this card represents the last card from a particularly bad repack box. Did you happen to notice how many 1990 Donruss and 1989 Fleer these haiku have been showing off this this year? Thankfully, the last repack box I bought has a lot more variety to it...

Red Sox Frankenset: Choosing Cards #1-3

I got to be honest, I've hit a bit of a rough patch when it comes to writing posts. Outside of a repack box to fuel my haiku series, I haven't bought many cards this summer. Also, I haven't done much trading outside of the Time Travel Trading Project. I do have a few posts I'm working on but aren't ready yet, thanks to a little bit of writer's block.

So I decided to move ahead with an idea I had. Being a team collector means that I often end up with a lot of copies of various Red Sox cards, and I've been toying with the idea of taking some of those cards and creating a Frankenset. I figured it would be fun to show off what I have, and get you all to help vote which cards should make the Frankenset.

A couple of thoughts as to how I hope to build this set. For starters, I don't want it to be comprised all of All-Stars and Hall of Famers. I want to give equal billing to the fan favorites, the bench and bullpen guys, the one season wonders, and so forth. In a perfect world, a player would only appear once in the Frankenset, but I know as of now that will not be feasible. Until it is, I'm going to try and limit a player to once per page.

I'm using the TCDB to see what cards of each number I have doubles of. In the future I'll probably consider cards with letter incorporated in the card number (i.e. traded sets), but for now, I'm sticking with just the plain numbered cards.

Lets start with the top row of the first page. Leave a comment and pick your choices!

#1

Just a heads up: since my collecting peak was in the late 80's and early 90's, you are going to see a lot of the same players, especially Roger Clemens and Wade Boggs. Again, my goal will be to hopefully only feature them each once per page. We'll see how that goes. I have some great Red Sox cards that lead off different sets, and it's a shame I don't have doubles of either the 2019 Stadium Club Mookie Betts or the 2019 Heritage Red Sox team card. That being said, there is something to be said for the Roger Clemens card. Not only was he my favorite player growing up, but that 20 strikeout game was a big factor how he ended up so. By becoming my favorite player, the Red Sox became my favorite team, and the rest is history. Plus, the 1987 Topps set was the first set I ever hand completed.

My choice: 1987 Topps #1 Roger Clemens (RB)

#2

I told you there would be a lot of Clemens and Boggs! Although it's probably my least favorite of the quartet, the fact I lead off with a Clemens card makes this the de facto choice. (I suppose I could go with my second choice for spot #1, the Greenwell, so I could put a better Rocket card here, but again that Clemens Record Breaker is a great testament to my fandom.)

My choice: 1989 Topps #2 Wade Boggs (RB)

#3

Finally, some diverse choices, and none of them are Clemens! Boggs has been picked, so he's out despite being a great food-issue card. Evans suffers from being another 1987 Topps card. Doerr would be a great choice except for one little issue - my extra copy of this Hall of Fame player is autographed and will remain well protected. That leaves two - do I complete the trifecta of Record Breaker cards with Reardon, or do I go horizontal and celebrate an important highlight from the team's latest World Series Championship?

My choice: 2019 Topps #3 Eduardo Nunez (WS)

So unless any of you can convince me otherwise, my top row of page 1 will look like this.

OK, not going to lie...having a horizontal card there bothers me a little, but I'm hoping once the page is filled out, I'll be OK with it.

What say you? Which cards would you choose?

Repack Haiku #322 (Mike Stanton)

"Four rings" club member
Won three straight with the Yankees
One post-trade with Braves

1992 Pinnacle #350 Mike Stanton

Stanton earned three World Series Championship rings during the Yankee dynasty. He was also given one by the Braves in 1995, even after he was traded at the deadline to the Red Sox.

Enjoying Some Light Reading With 4 Hall Of Famers*

*OK technically 3, but it's only a matter of time for the fourth one!

It's reasonable to expect that those of us in the blogging world have (at the very least) some level of writing competence. Some of us are actually rather talented. Take Chris (The Collector) for example. In addition to being a good writer, he's also a good storyteller. Recently, he shared a story he wrote up on his blog page. It's quite good, and you can still read it if you haven't had a chance.

As a thank you to a few of us that commented, Chris offered up some cards we could claim. I snagged a quartet of guys who don't have much representation in my collection:

Prior to these cards, I had less than 10 cards of each player. Baker finally reaches double-digits, but not the others. It's always good to boost the numbers!

Favorite Card: I'm a sucker for those Conlon Collection cards. Sisler wins!

Thanks for the cards Chris!

An Overdue Thank You

I suck at writing thank you notes.

I always have been. It's not that I'm not thankful, I'm just one of those people that will quickly put it on the back-burner and then forget about it until months later when it randomly pops back into my brain. The "Oh sh!t, I forgot to do that!" moments have probably just gotten worse as I've gotten older.

It dawned on me the other day that when I write blog posts about cards others have sent me, I'm essentially writing a thank you note to that person. Just like their stationary brethren, I'll occasionally put one off until later until it gets forgotten. Then I remember, get embarrassed at myself, and remind myself that it's not too late.

Today's overdue acknowledgement of gratitude goes to Jon at A Penny Sleeve For Your Thoughts. Remember back in April when he was giving away all those cards? I do, because I ended up with a stack of them. I still haven't shown them off, and that needs to be rectified.

Ahem...

Dear Jon,

Thank you for the generous gift of cards you sent me. I appreciate the chance to add new Red Sox cards to my collection.

I've always loved Laughlin cards, so it was nice to add a couple of those...

...along with a company I appreciate, the short lived Ted Williams sets.

It's always great to add Hall of Famers to my collection too!

I especially like this Upper Deck set. I may have to try and complete that one!

Even these cards will be a welcome addition to my collection. Kellogg's are always fun, as are cards of larger than life personalities like Martin and Manny. I'm not an Ichiro collector, but how could you not love a mother's day/breast cancer card or one of Topps few tributes to 1987?

All of these cards have made my collection even better, and every time I look at them I will be reminded of your kindness. Thank you again, Jon!

Sincerely,
Matt
