Appreciating My Flaws

Cards getting beat and abused is nothing new to me. Growing up, my friends and I routinely wrapped our cards up in rubber bands. I'm sure a few of them still put them in their bike spokes. As far as I can recall, we never taped or glued them to albums or stuck them to the wall with push pins. The hobby was different back then, and so was how we treated our collections.

Earlier this month, a TCDB named Leroy posted on the site's forums offering flawed cards for free. They were, in his words, "cards I would not sell or trade, but I will give them away. They might have corners that are too soft, or scratches, or gum/glue residue, or who knows what. But someone might want them."

He was willing to give anyone up to four cards of their choice free to good homes. I have no problem with soft corners and scratches, so I looked to see what was available. There was just a single Red Sox card available, which I put a claim in. Lee messaged me back and said to take up to four, so I did:

I gotta be honest, I thought these were going to be a lot worse. The corners, the bends - all in line with most cards from the 60's I see nowadays. The Lefebvre has a little paper loss, but still looks good to me!

Favorite Card: I'll give Stanek the win here for having the best background.

Thanks, Leroy!

Repack Haiku #373 (Jack Daugherty)

Hit ten career home runs
Two of which hit in same game
Versus the Red Sox

1990 Donruss #461 Jack Daugherty (RC)

On July 8, 1990, Daugherty hit a 7th inning home run against Roger Clemens. In his next at-bat, he swatted a game tying home run in the 9th against Jeff Reardon.

When Do You Go For The Complete Set?

The Trading Card Database has a lot of cool little features. One of those is the ability to view a list of every incomplete set you have, along with a completion percentage. I was looking at my list recently, and contemplating the sets towards the top. At what point do you go: "I have enough cards from this set - I should really just go ahead and complete it."?

Now most set completionists I know usually concentrate on a few at a time, and usually have particular sets in mind that they target, regardless of how close they are. This question is more for those sets you just happen to end up with a lot of cards from. I would think for most people, being over the halfway point would be where most start to think about this. I have 24 sets in which I am over 50% complete. This does not include insert sets or smaller boxed sets. I don't see myself completing all 24 of those sets though. In fact, there are numerous sets under that threshold that I know I like better and would like to someday have a full set of, and would prioritize those over some of the ones here.

So with that in mind, let's look at the sets I have mostly completed, and my feelings towards completing them.

Sets over 90% complete:

2016 Topps Archives
#83 Satchel Paige

  • 1988 Leaf (97.73% - missing 6 cards)
  • 2016 Topps Archives (93.55% - missing 20 cards)

These seem to be no-brainers right? If you have over 90% of a set complete, why not just go for it? I'm only missing 6 cards from the 1988 Leaf set. I'm definitely getting that completed someday. 2016 Topps Archives is a weird one though. I'd love to complete it, but I really don't have the strong pull to chase down the 10 short prints from the set. Do I finish off the 10 non-SP cards and be content with the 300 card base? Or will those short prints taunt me?

Sets over 80% complete:

1991 Topps
#333 Chipper Jones (FRDP, RC)

  • 1991 Topps (84.22% - missing 125 cards)

My recent purchase of a few packs of this it what prompted the idea for this post. Again, this seems like one of those levels of completion where most would still decide to finish a set off. I've always appreciated this set with its 40th Anniversary logo, as well as its historical place in the history of the hobby (It's the last set to contain gum, as well as the last to use the grey card stock). Almost 85% of the set seems easy enough, but due to the size that still means I'm still missing 125 cards. Granted, it's from the overproduction era and I could probably purchase those remaining cards for under $10 total, but over 100 cards to go still doesn't scream close to completion, does it?

Sets over 70% complete:

1977 Topps
#144 Bruce Sutter (RC)

  • 1977 Topps (78.48% - missing 142 cards)
  • 1991 Fleer (77.80% - missing 160 cards)
  • 2024 Topps (72.30% - missing 230 cards)
  • 1991 Score (72.12% - missing 194 cards)

Perhaps this is the first level where doubt sets in. I think by virtue of being a 70's set that I have most of the keys cards from, the 1977 set would be one I'd work on completing. I also have been enjoying this year's set design enough that I would like to finish it too. The rest though...maybe? I like the Score set well enough, and the Fleer set might be ironically worthwhile just because the design was so unpopular. But again, we're talking a hundred+ cards away from completion.

Sets over 60% complete:

1971 Fleer World Series (Black Backs)
#73 1975 - Reds vs. Red Sox

  • 1971 Fleer Laughlin World Series Black Backs (68.00% - missing 24 cards)
  • 1992 Fleer (67.64% - missing 233 cards)
  • 1992 Upper Deck (67.63% - missing 259 cards)
  • 1994 Collector's Choice (65.22% - missing 233 cards)
  • 2018 Topps Update (65.00% - missing 105 cards)
  • 2019 Topps (62.71% - missing 262 cards)
  • 1986 Topps (62.50% - missing 297 cards)

I enjoy the Laughlin cards and will pick those up whenever I can. That set is definitely on my "To Complete" list. 1986 Topps is a strong possibility too. The others, I'm just lukewarm towards right now. I will point out though, that if I was ever crazy enough to try and complete a parallel set, I think I'd go for the 150th Anniversary stamp from 2019 Topps over its base set. I've been tempted!

Sets over 50% complete:

2019 Stadium Club #11
Andrew Benintendi

  • 1991 Bowman (58.95% - missing 289 cards)
  • 1992 Donruss (57.78% - missing 331 cards)
  • 1987 Donruss (56.97% - missing 284 cards)
  • 2017 Topps (67.57% - missing 304 cards)
  • 2016 Topps Update (56.33% - missing 131 cards)
  • 1980 Topps (55.92% - missing 320 cards)
  • 2019 Stadium Club (52.49% - missing 143 cards)
  • 1992 Topps (52.02% - missing 380 cards)
  • 2016 Topps (52.00% - missing 336 cards)
  • 1992 Score (51.74% - missing 431 cards)

Of all of these, only two sets stand out as possibilities. The 1980 set, again by virtue of it's age and the fact that I already own the key Rickey Henderson rookie, makes me lean towards completing it someday. I'd also think it'd be fun to complete a Stadium Club set, especially the 2019 set since it came in the aftermath of the last Red Sox World Championship.  Not really feeling the others though, not yet at least.

I'm curious how my fellow collectors feel when it comes to having a large portion of a set, and the choices made when deciding which sets to prioritize when going for a complete one. Let me know!

Trapped In Time: Remnants Of The 96th And 97th Trades

Unlike last month, this post contains a lot of cards, with lots of vintage! All of these cards have sat in the Time Travel Trading stack for over 3 years, so it's time to put them on the proverbial chopping block!

Trade #96 (Bo: Baseball Cards Come To Life)
Traded 04/27/21:  2021 Topps #274 Freddy Galvis, 2020 Topps Heritage #36 Kenley Jansen, 2020 Topps Heritage #176 Dinelson Lamet, 2013 Topps (football) #30 Marshawn Lynch (AP), 1992 MJB Holoprism Chuck Knoblauch #R/4 Chuck Knoblauch, 2006 SPx (football) #39 Reggie Wayne, 2004 Donruss Studio #216 Michael Wuertz (AU, RC, SN800)

Received 05/03/21:
  • 2009-10 Panini Season Update - Christmas Cards Materials #22 Jeff Pendergraph (MEM, SN499) (See Trade #144)
  • 1974 Topps #461 John Odom
  • 1974 Topps #473 World Series Game 2 (See Trade #104)
  • 1974 Topps #506 Ed Farmer (See Trade #151)
  • 1974 Topps #519 Bill Sharp (RC)
  • 1974 Topps #570 Ralph Garr (See Trade #104)
  • 1974 Topps #583 Marty Pattin
  • 1974 Topps #601 Rookie Outfielders (See Trade #104)

  • 1974 Topps (football) #316 Thom Darden (RC, UER) (See Trade #112)
  • 1974 Topps (football) #421 Roger Wehrli (See Trade #100)
  • 1974 Topps (football) #513 Bill Lueck (RC) (See Trade #191)

Another trade with Bo (Baseball Cards Come To Life!) is represented here. This trade package was heavy on cards from 1974. As you can see, I did quite well in trading those off with just this trio of cards remaining. The Odom is a little beat up, which might explain the lack of interest, but the other two are good and I was a little surprised they have been here so long.

Traded 04/27/21: 1961 Topps #215 Gus Bell, 1967 Topps #125 Moe Drabowsky, 1969 Topps (football) #228 Jim Butler, 1971 Topps #374 Clete Boyer, 1975 Topps (football) #450 Terry Metcalf, 1978 Topps (football) #439 John Matuszak, 1981 Topps (football) #403 Cliff Branch, 1981 Fleer #27 Tim McCarver, 1985 Topps (football) #176 James Wilder, 1992 Fleer Ultra #594 Dave Righetti

Received 05/06/21:
  • 1991 Stadium Club #327 Terry Pendleton (See Trade #159)
  • 1991 Stadium Club #332 Dennis Eckersley (See Trade #142)
  • 1984 Donruss #376 Charlie Lea
  • 1984 Fleer #482 Bill Scherrer (RC)
  • 1980 Topps #516 Hector Cruz
  • 1980 Topps #595 Don Money

  • 1976 Topps #567 George Stone

  • 1960 Topps #77 Hank Foiles (See Trade #101)
  • 1960 Topps #275 Curt Flood (See Trade #99)

I never know what cards will be snatched up and which ones won't. This batch from regular blog reader Ken has so many good cards in it, I'm shocked so many still remain after all this time! Hey, I'll gladly add all of these to my collection!

Last call for these cards! They have been hanging around too long and will find themselves in my personal collection unless someone makes a claim for them. All it takes is an older card!

Repack Haiku #372 (Van Snider)

Royals traded him
For future All-Star closer
Later joined police

1989 Donruss #586 Van Snider (RC)

Snider was and up-and-coming prospect in the Kansas City system when he was traded to Cincinati in exchange for a rookie pitcher who had just finished the season with 6.52 ERA. That trade worked out well for Kansas City, as Snider played in only 19 games across two seasons with the Reds. Meanwhile, Jeff Montgomery became a 3 time All-Star and finished in the top 30 all-time in career saves.

Snider later became a detective in the Mayfield Heights, OH police department, becoming part of their Drug Enforcement Unit.

Time Travel Trading Update #92

Only two trades this go-around (with one incoming), but still a great variety of cards with tons of star power!

Brendan (The View From The Third Floor) kicks things off with a page full of big names across all 4 major U.S. sports.

Janikowski was the only name I didn't know, so I had to look him up. (Didn't realize he was born in Poland!) He and the always inspirational Jim Abbott are the only non-Hall of Famers in this group.

Bo (Baseball Cards  Come To Life!) is up next with more Hall of Famers, some great oddballs, and a beautiful vintage card!

That Boggs card got a good laugh out of me! Also, I didn't realize True Value was one of the hundreds of businesses that produced cards in the 80's (Man I miss those times...)

Thanks for the trades Brendan and Bo!

As always, these cards are all available in exchange for an older card. You can claim your cards below, or through the TCDB (Kep75). Let's make some trades!

The Time Travel Trading Project is simple in concept. I started out with a random pack of 2018 Topps Series 1 baseball cards. My aim was to trade every card in that pack for something older. Each card I receive in turn is then made available for trade, with the goal to get the oldest card I can get.

Number of trades completed: 316
Unique trading partners: 78
