Time Travel Trading Update #78

Only three trades to show off this month. However, two of them were huge so there is still our usual amount of turnover and plenty of new cardboard for your perusal.

Bo (Baseball Cards Come To Life!) kicks things off. He's been throwing some 1987 O-Pee-Chee at me lately, which has been well-received. A few more to add this time as well, along with some vintage and a trio of Nolan Ryan cards.

Time Traveling regular Ken sent multiple PWE my way. I'll start by showing off some non-sports cards first. Ken is hoping someone will appreciate 90's pop culture in the form of TV's Lois and Clark or the original Addams Family movie. Men of a certain age can especially appreciate Teri Hatcher draped in Superman's cape. Yes, "They're real and they're spectacular!"

There's plenty of baseball as well! Current cards all the way back through the 90's. (Oh, before you even try, I'm officially claiming that Pedro!)

Ken also provided some 70's goodness as well...

...including a nice lot of 1974 Topps!

We finish off the lot with even more vintage from the seventies and 1960.

Our last trade for today comes via the TCDB and one of our Canadian friends, JF! He sent a great variety of cards this time too!

What's this? Even more non-sports cards? Whether you're into sci-fi or superheroes, JF has you covered!

How about some stickers? Of Montreal Expos no less!

More baseball...

...along with some basketball and hockey!

Thanks for the trades guys! Almost 100 new cards added, and close to 800 cards in total!

As always, these cards are all available in exchange for an older card. You can claim your cards below, or through the TCDB (Kep75). Let's make some trades!

The Time Travel Trading Project is simple in concept. I started out with a random pack of 2018 Topps Series 1 baseball cards. My aim was to trade every card in that pack for something older. Each card I receive in turn is then made available for trade, with the goal to get the oldest card I can get.

Number of trades completed: 255
Unique trading partners: 71

Number of cards mailed out: 1,396
Year of oldest card mailed out: 1910-11

Number of cards received: 2,077
Year of oldest card received: 1890

Happy Father's Day!

1985 Topps #133 Ray/Bob Boone (F&S)

A rare Sunday post to wish my many of  fellow collectors out there a Happy Father's Day! Did you know there are 28 guys who have played a game this year (actually 26 - 2 guys are on the IL) who are second-generation players? I didn't realize there were so many!

  • Craig and Cavan Biggio

  • Charlie and Ke'Bryan Hayes
  • Fernando and Jonathan Hernandez
  • Mark and Mark (Jr.) Leiter
  • Lance and Lance (Jr.) McCullers
  • Brian and Hoby Milner

  • Fernando and Fernando (Jr.) Tatis
  • Brian and Brice Turang
  • Gary and Daulton Varsho
  • Tim and Chad Wallach
  • Bobby and Bobby (Jr.) Witt

Of course, I'd also have to mention the legendary grandfather-grandson pairing of Carl and Mike Yastrzemski! (Bonus Happy Father's Day to you grandfathers out there!)

An Exclusive All-Star Club

2015 Topps Update
#US364 Mike Trout (AS)

Recently, MLB released it's first update of voting results for this year's All-Star game. As it stands now, Mike Trout is on track to be one of the starting outfielders for the American League. Should he be named a starter, he'll become just the 9th player ever selected by the fans to start 10 consecutive All-Star games! He's been named the starter every year since 2013 (with the exception of 2020, which of course did not have an All-Star game). Who else is in this prestigious club?

Voted to start 10 straight All-Star Games:

Johnny Bench, C (1969-1978)

1976 Topps #300 Johnny Bench (AS)

After Bench's streak was broken in 1979 (he was injured anyway), he was selected as the starter for the 1980 All-Star Game.

Wade Boggs, 3B (1987-1996)

1987 Topps #608 Wade Bogg (AS, LL)

Boggs' first All-Star start was actually in 1986, when he replaced the injured George Brett.

Willie Mays, OF (1957-1966)

1958 Topps #486 Willie Mays (AS)

Mays also won an NL Gold Glove Award and finished in the top six in MVP voting in all 10 of these seasons.

Ozzie Smith, SS (1983-1992)

1992 Donruss #423 Ozzie Smith (AS)

Ozzie failed to make the All-Star team in 1993, but was the fans' selection the next two years.

Voted to start 11 straight All-Star Games:

George Brett, 3B (1976-1986)

1978 Topps #100 George Brett (AS)

Just think, the AL All-Star squad only had 2 elected starting third basemen from 1976 to 1996!

Ken Griffey Jr., OF (1990-2000)

1993 Stadium Club Murphy
#56 Ken Griffey, Jr. (AS)

All of these All-Star starts came before he turned 30 years old!

Voted to start 13 straight All-Star Games:

Cal Ripken Jr., SS/3B (1989-2001)

1991 Upper Deck Final Edition
#85F Cal Ripken Jr. (AS)

In 1988, Alan Trammell was voted in as the AL starting shortstop. If not for that little blip, Ripken's streak would have started in 1984. (Ironically enough, Trammell got hurt and couldn't play. Guess who started in his place?)

Voted to start an amazing 18 straight All-Star Games:

Rod Carew, 2B/1B (1967-1984)

1970 Topps #453 Rod Carew (AS)

This is the part where I remind you Carew played for 19 seasons. His last year (1985) was the only year he ever played without being selected to the All-Star game, not even as a reserve.

Here's hoping Trout joins this elite club!

Repack Haiku #310 (Jonathan Schoop)

Third from Curaçao
To reach one thousand base hits
With Jones and Simmons

2020 Topps Heritage
#572 Jonathan Schoop

Last year, he joined Andruw Jones and Andrelton Simmons as the only natives from the Caribbean island to reach this benchmark. Fellow countryman Jurickson Profar and Ozzie Albies, both with over 700 hits,  have a good chance to join them.

Valley League Alum In The Majors

Earlier this month, the Shenandoah Valley Baseball League kicked off the 2023 season. The SVBL is a summer collegiate baseball league that has been around since 1897. The SVBL is funded in part by a grant from Major League Baseball and is a member of the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball (NACSB), a national affiliation of 13 collegiate summer leagues. Hundreds of players who have played in this league have gone on to play in the Majors. I thought it would be fun to look at the dozen that have played so far this season.

Austin Adams, Diamondbacks

(2011 Staunton Braves)

2020 Topps Total #802 Austin Adams

Adams is in his 7th Major League season, having debuted in 2017 with the Washington Nationals. After stops in Seattle and San Diego, he signed with the Diamondbacks this past off-season.

Graham Ashcraft, Reds

(2018 Waynesboro Generals)

2023 Topps #214 Graham Ashcraft (RC)

Ashcraft is one of two current players who have played for my hometown team, the Waynesboro Generals. He debuted last year and is among the stable of exciting young players that have started coming up through the Reds' system.

Mike Brosseau, Brewers

(2015 Waynesboro Generals)

2022 Topps #223 Mike Brosseau

Brosseau just happens to be the other former General. He hit a pinch hit, tie-breaking home run off Aroldis Chapman to give the Rays the win in Game 5 of the 2020 ALDS.

Chris Devenski, Angels

(2011 Woodstock River Bandits)

2020 Topps Heritage #651 Chris Devenski

Devenski was once one of the top relievers in baseball, making the 2017 All-Star team as a member of  the eventual World Series Champion Houston Astros. Arm injuries limited him to just 25 games between 2020-2022. Healthy again, he has become a valuable member of the Angel's bullpen.

Brendan Donovan, Cardinals

(2016 New Market Rebels)

2023 Topps #584 Brendan Donovan (ASR)

Donovan's name is etched in history as the National League's first ever winner of the Gold Glove at the  Utility position. He continues his utility role this year, having already started at 6 different positions.

Austin Gomber, Rockies

(2012 Luray Wranglers)

2022 Topps Heritage
#446 Austin Gomber (SP)

Gomber has been a part of the Rockies' rotation for the past three years. He was one of the players the Rockies received from St. Louis in exchange for Nolan Arenado.

Romy Gonzalez, White Sox

(2016 Staunton Braves)

2022 Topps Gypsy Queen
#233 Romy Gonzalez (RC)

Gonzalez is currently a bench/utility player on the White Sox roster. He made his debut as a September call-up in 2021.

Chad Kuhl, Nationals

(2012 New Market Rebels)

2022 Topps Update #US71 Chad Kuhl

Kuhl is not having a great season, but when your wife is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, you can't fault him. Here's hoping Amanda Kuhl heals quickly, and that Chad can get back to concentrating on lesser important things like baseball.

Tommy La Stella, Mariners

(2009 Haymarket Senators)

2022 Topps Heritage
#439 Tommy La Stella (SP)

La Stella was another former All-Star, but I wouldn't blame you if you didn't know that.  He was having a terrific 2019 season for the Angels as their lead-off hitter and second baseman, but a week before the All-Star game, he fractured his tibia on a foul ball and never got to play. He has also won a World Series ring with the 2016 Chicago Cubs. The Mariners released him in May and he is currently a free agent.

Emilio Pagan, Twins

(2010 Harrisonburg Turks)

2023 Topps Heritage
#415 Emilio Pagan (SP)

Pagan is a successful reliever who has appeared in over 300 games since he reached the Majors in 2017. He has played for 5 teams, and each time he joined a new team it was via a trade.

Vinnie Pasquantino, Royals

(2017 Charlottesville Tom Sox)

2023 Topps
#302 Vinnie Pasquantino (ASR, RC)

Pasquantino's nickname is "The Italian Nightmare". He was a member of Team Italy during the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Nate Pearson, Blue Jays

(2016 Staunton Braves)

2022 Topps - Oversized 1987 Topps
Future Stars Box Topper
#87FS-18 Nate Pearson

Pearson was a 1st Round draft pick for Toronto in 2017. His rookie debut came during the COVID-shortened 2020 season. His first game was a "home" game in Washington D.C. against Max Scherzer. (COVID restrictions forced the Blue Jays to play all of their games stateside, and their AAA Stadium in Buffalo wasn't ready yet, so they played the Nationals as the home team in D.C.)

Ryan Yarbrough, Royals

(2012 Luray Wranglers)

2022 Topps Update #US176 Ryan Yarborough

Yarbrough is currently on the 60-day injured list after suffering multiple fractures when a 106 mph line drive struck him in the head. Here's hoping he bounces back and can continue his playing career.

Repack Haiku #309 (Jesse Orosco)

One of thirty-one
To have played in four decades
One of twelve pitchers

1989 Fleer #68 Jesse Orosco

Orosco debuted for the Mets in 1979 and played for 24 years. In his final season, 2003, the 46 years old played for three different teams (Padres, Yankees, and Twins).

Programmed To Receive

You can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave! (*cue guitar solo)

I went to college majoring in computer science. I learned a variety of computer languages, wrote numerous scripts, and created what kids nowadays would call "apps". I hated it. It was tedious, boring, and few things will frustrate you as much as spending hours staring at thousands of lines of code looking for one single mistyped character that prevents your whole script from executing properly.

Needless to say, I can only give my respect to anyone who does it, especially those that do it out of their own sense of moxie. Kevin (The Diamond King) wanted a database that would fill his personal needs as a collector, and decided to make his own. He put together a database that does what he wanted, created a short little video tour, and invited his readers to check it out.

He did a great job, and you can tell it'll only get better as he tweaks it and adds to it. With my programming background, I felt compelled to offer my support and commented what insight I could.

As a thank you, Kevin held a little giveaway for those who commented, and I ended up with some cards:

The cards he offered were fantastic, and it was tough to whittle my choices down to these six. Of course, I had to pick up Red Sox cards, especially when they are serial numbered or feature Hall of Famers. I also picked up two more Laughlin World Series cards, which combined with the ones I got from another recent Diamond King giveaway, strengthen that internal pull to finish at least one of the sets.

Thanks for the cards, Kevin!

Shiny Winnings

Johnny (Johnny's Trading Spot) continues to give out cards on an almost daily basis, and once again I was a winner (actually twice in back to back days!).

The stuff Johnny gives out isn't junk either. He sends some good cards, and this time was particularly amazing.

Starting out were some cards I've never seen before, but are absolutely beautiful in hand:

These cards are from the 2022 Topps Chrome Ben Baller Edition - an online set if I'm not mistaken. I'm not familiar with this sets backstory, and the BB logo is rather tacky, but the black border on chrome is just *chef's kiss*.

The rest of this prize envelope wasn't too shabby either, highlighted by a Stadium Club rookie card of Rafael Devers:

Two wins equals two envelopes, and the other PWE from Johnny continued with the shiny goodness.

Thanks again Johnny! You are a shining star of the blogging community!
