Repack Haiku #305 (Ken Oberkfell)

Struggled with the choice
Of being strike replacement
Signed, but changed his mind

1989 Topps #751 Ken Oberkfell

Oberkfell was apparently friends with then-Phillies GM Lee Thomas, which was a factor in him initially agreeing to cross picket lines during the 1995 strike as a replacement player. Eventually his guilt, as well as a bum shoulder, made him decide to leave the Philadelphia camp before the season began.

  1. I'm mostly pro-labor, but it must have been tough for guys like him to pass up another chance to play in the bigs.

  2. I don't fault him for wanting to play, even more so because he wasn't one of the ones that was gonna be making millions after the strike, so why not try and take advantage of the situation for another go.

  3. Mainly remember Oberkfell for his days with the Braves and Cardinals. Had no idea he played for the Pirates or crossed the picket lines.
