Today Is Going To Be A Great Day!

It's Opening Day!

Today all of baseball fandom celebrates a new season of baseball! Every team plays today, and it will be glorious.

It also happens to be Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale's birthday today. He may not be the Opening Day starter this year, but he's looked good and managed to stay healthy so far, so hopefully that good health continues and he has a solid if not excellent season.

This is the latest addition to my Chris Sale collection, a bonus card from TCDB superstar mzenko. (Thanks Mark!)

It also happens to be my birthday, which will be spent eating my traditional birthday dinner (chicken parmesan), followed by my traditional birthday dessert (peanut butter pie), all the while watching as much baseball as I can (thanks to the free subscription of MLB.TV I get from T-Mobile!)

I hope you all have a great day too! Go Red Sox!

Repack Haiku #299 (Darrin Jackson)

One of two runners
Michael Jordan batted in
For exhibition

1992 Pinnacle #207 Darrin Jackson

Back in the days before inter-league play, the Cubs and White Sox would have annual exhibition games against each other. In 1994, the White Sox called upon a rather famous "prospect" to participate. Playing in front of the Wrigley Field crowd, Jordan had two RBI hits, including a game tying double.  An earlier single plated Jackson.

Blog Trade Recap: Cards From Lansing, MI

Back in January, I was contacted by regular blog reader Stuart, who comments under the handle Poison75. He proposed a trade, and ended up sending a lot of Red Sox cards my way! Too many to show off here, so I'll show off a few of my favorites.

A Lot Of 1983 Topps Red Sox

1983 was one of those years where I didn't collect baseball cards, so I don't have many cards from the set, let alone the Red Sox team. Stuart knocked most of what I needed off the list, leaving just Yastrzemski and a certain Hall of Famer's rookie card.

1998 Pacific Revolution - Prime Time Performers
#2 Nomar Garciaparra

This card is a card so ugly it's got charm. That green and white background is hideous, but it is a die-cut featuring the legendary Nomah!

2003 Donruss Diamond Kings
#14 Rickey Henderson

Rickey spent just one season with Boston at the tail end of his career, so it's always cool to see cards of him representing the Red Sox.

2002 Topps 206 - Team 206 Series 2
#T206-25 Pedro Martinez

Here's Pedro in a vintage looking set, squinting at you knowing full well he could strike you out on 3 pitches.

1968 Topps #581 Garry Roggenburk

I never expect vintage in my personal trades, so getting a card of "Double R" Garry Roggenburk was a pleasant surprise.

2002 Upper Deck Vintage #79 Manny Ramirez (TC)

Last but not least we have an excellently framed Tatooine card featuring the one and only Manny Ramirez Manny might not be looking at you, but at least his shadow is waving "Hi!"

Thanks for the trade Stuart!

Trapped In Time - Remnants Of The 33rd Trade

No takers on last month's Viola, so off he goes into my collection.

It's not unusual that when I get a return from a Time Travel trade, a Red Sox card happens to be among them. Quite often, they are cards I don't have, and I'm tempted to keep them. Sometimes I'll make a personal trade and swap them out, while other times I'll roll the dice and keep them in the stack. If they get claimed, I make a mental note that I still need the card, but otherwise I have no regrets. It's trades like this that make it easy to see "why".

  • 1960 Topps #118 Bob Bruce (RC,RS) (See Trade #35)
Sure, I was tempted to keep that Nomar. If I had, would I have received this insanely generous trade from gwhy11? He could have just sent me a single card, but he sent a big stack of cards, filled with Hall of Famers, oddballs, and general cardboard goodness. This one Red Sox card was the springboard for multiple trades, and helped push the Time Travel Trading Project to new heights. And yet, two cards from the 1960's never moved away.

I would say this is your last chance to trade for the Orioles Rookie Stars card, but as luck would have it there is another one still in the stack. This is Henderson's last stand however. If no one want to make an offer of an older card for either of these two, then my relatively small collection of cards from this decade get slightly bigger.

Repack Haiku #298 (Chuck Crim)

Molitor...Yount...Crim?
Joined Brewers' Wall Of Honor
In twenty-fourteen

1990 Donruss #221 Chuck Crim

I'll be the first to admit I never thought of him as one of Milwaukee's all-time greats, but he is among a rather large contingent of players honored by the team.

Time Travel Trading Update #75

After starting this project with a single pack of 2018 Topps, it has become a yearly tradition to add a pack of the newest base set each year. I'll admit I was a little worried that I wasn't going to find any locally this year, but fortunately a Target run proved to be beneficial. I'm proud to add the following cards to the stack:

Our first trade comes via the TCDB. I reached out to a guy named Cody because he had a couple of basketball cards on his want list that were featured recently as Time Travel "remnants". I'm happy to trade basketball for baseball any day:

Next we have a sizable trade from Chris (The Collector). He picked up a nice assortment of cards, and in return he sent cards from each of the four major sports.

Here's some baseball and football:

Here's some hockey and basketball:

Regular blog reader/trade partner Ken has a tendency towards generous returns in our trade. This one was no different, with three dozen football cards coming back to me:

Bo (Baseball Cards Come To Life!) has his own yearly tradition. Whenever I add a pack of the newest base set, he usually hangs back a day or two and trades for any that weren't claimed. So don't wait too long if one of those 2023 cards catch your eye! If fresh cards aren't your thing, perhaps some of the great cards Bo sent from his last trade will pique your interest!

Our last trade of the evening comes from Greg (Night Owl Cards), who sent along this nice quartet of baseball cards:

Over 100 new cards, with 2 more trades still pending. Next month looks like it'll be another good one. Thanks again to all my trade partners!

As always, these cards are all available in exchange for an older card. You can claim your cards below, or through the TCDB (Kep75). Let's make some trades!

The Time Travel Trading Project is simple in concept. I started out with a random pack of 2018 Topps Series 1 baseball cards. My aim was to trade every card in that pack for something older. Each card I receive in turn is then made available for trade, with the goal to get the oldest card I can get.

Number of trades completed: 236 (2 pending)
Unique trading partners: 70

Number of cards mailed out: 1,221
Year of oldest card mailed out: 1910-11

Number of cards received: 1,816
Year of oldest card received: 1890
