This Sunday is Father's Day. As a father of four, I'm looking forward to a little extra attention on that day. A couple of years ago, I did a Father's Day post listing all of the sons of former major league players currently in the MLB. Since this year's Topps Heritage set included a subset of Father and Sons, and I thought it would be a good excuse to update the list.

Ranking 50 Years Worth Of Topps #330 Cards #10 - #1

In honor of my 50th birthday, I'm ranking all 51 Topps base cards numbered #330 since 1975. Why #330? Because my birthday was on 03/30. Why 51 cards when I've turned 50? Because that's how math works, and as my father-in-law likes to say, I didn't turn 50, I started my 51st year of existence!

 

Today we finish off this week-long series with the 10 greatest cards. These are the ones I just couldn't keep looking at, and there are some amazing cards here! Rankings are purely subjective to my whim. 

#10 - 2022 (Jacob deGrom)

 

An excellently cropped horizontal card. I know some people might prefer seeing all of the player, but for a close-up like this, I don't mind a missing leg.

 

#9 - 1991 (Dwight Gooden)

 

From one Cy Young-winning Mets pitcher to another! I always liked how players "broke through" the border on the 1991 design, giving it almost a 3-D effect. Gooden and his powerful fastball are a good example of this.

 

#8 - 2023 (Julio Rodriguez)

 

Does anyone collect "flying helmet" cards? That always seemed like it would be a fun little mini-collection.

 

#7 - 2011 (Derek Jeter)

 

Yeah, I know. It kills me putting this guy so high up on the list. The card deserves it, as we get another "Anti-Tatooine" card of Jetes doing his famous leaping throw. At least he looks goofy doing it...

 

#6 - 2021 (Juan Soto)

 

I love the clarity on this one. Take away the graphical elements of the card itself, and this image could have been pulled directly from a game I was watching on the television.

 

#5 - 1976 (Nolan Ryan)

 

The top Hall of Famer on my list, Nolan Ryan's intense glare makes this card memorable. I fear for whoever had to step up to the plate against him after this shot was taken.

 

#4 - 1992 (Will Clark)

 

You don't see many shots of a first baseman kneeling to catch the ball. My favorite element of this card is actually the Expos player behind Clark, kicking up dirt as he slides back into base.

 

#3 - 2008 (Curtis Granderson)

 

Along those same lines of base running greatness, Granderson looks like he is sliding just so he can avoid the Topps logo above him.

 

#2 - 2012 (Matt Kemp)

 

Matt Kemp's face is everything here. Even he's unsure if he'll make the catch, but if that dirty uniform is any indication, he's going to give it his all!

 

Finally, my friends, the moment you've all been waiting for! I present to you the greatest Topps base card #330 of the past 51 years:

#1 - 2013 (Ryan Raburn)

 

This is why you don't blur out the background! Each spectator pictured has an amazingly unique facial expression! Some are looking at the player, some tracking the ball. Some are screaming, some are relaxed and chill (The girl on the right looks like she could even be singing). From either side, the outstretched arms of unknown dreamers hope the ball lands in their possession. Then there is Raburn, his own facial expression a snapshot of baseball. Shades on, but you know he's tracking. Is he yelling "I got it!" or "Oh crap"? I'm not incredibly familiar with the 2013 set, but I'd have a hard time believing this card wasn't one of the best looking.

 

For those of you that read this whole series, I thank you. It started out as an idea for a singular post on my birthday, but I'm glad I broke it down into multiple posts instead. I hope you enjoyed it.

 

I'll end things by proposing a blog bat-around! I'd love to see a Top 10 list centered on cards containing your "birth number". Obviously, some birthdays towards the back end of the year won't be able to do this, but in that case feel free to pick another date - anniversary, spouse or children's birthdays, Jackie Robinson Day - whatever you like!

A Trio Of Trades Completes The Set!

Last year, I didn't complete any major sets. When I realized how close I was to completing the 2024 Topps Holiday set, I was highly motivated to get it done. Fortunately, I found numerous people on the TCDB that looked like they were working on the same set, so I was able to make some quick and easy swaps!

 

The first trade I'm showing off if from Aaron in Pennsville, NJ. Aaron's return knocked these off the list:

 

 

I followed that up with a smaller trade with Nick in Portland, OR.

 

 

Finally, one last trade with Phillip in Owingsville, KY.

 

 

Thanks to these three trades and these three awesome trade partners, the 20024 Topps Holiday set is complete! This marks the second Holiday set I've completed, with the 2019 set being the first. I've also been making great progress on the 2024 base set, so hopefully I'll have that one done before Opening Day as well!

The Lingering Threads Of 2024

It's hard to believe we are almost a month into 2025 already. As for me, I'm still thinking back to 2024. Well, at least I am when it comes to baseball cards. Awhile back, I mused about completing the 2024 base set. Thanks to two of my fellow bloggers, I'm incredibly close to finishing off the set!

 

The first boost of cards came from Johnny (Johnny's Trading Spot). He sent me 145 cards from the set, which left me with just 35 to go!

Shortly thereafter, I received a package from Fuji (The Chronicles of Fuji)!

He sent 86 cards my way, and between him and Johnny I am now down to needing just 23 cards!

I've never been one for New Year's resolutions, but I have these goals in place for right now! Wish me luck!

TCDB Trade Recap: Cards From Colorado Springs, CO

I'm trying to make an effort to finish off the 2024 Topps Red Sox cards. If I can expand that to knock a few more from the base set in general, all the better.  That was my thought process on a recent TCDB trade with a gent named Eric. I sent him some set needs, he sent me back some as well:

 

I'm down to needing 3 more Red Sox cards for this set (Refsnyder, Grissom, and Dalbec), and my full set stands at just under 75% complete. I'll probably throw a want list up once I hit the 80% mark, and maybe I'll get myself motivated to knock it out before the year ends.

A Trade Between Bloggers: The Hopeful Chase

It always makes me happy when a blogger comes back after a long hiatus. Justin from The Hopeful Chase posted recently, detailing his quest to trade for the remaining cards he needs for the 2024 Topps set. As a fellow TCDB member, I was able to see what cards he needed, and as it turned out I had a few extras I could send his way. He was able to send a few Red Sox needs back to me

 

 As well as a few 2024 Topps needs of my own! (I'm low-key trying to finish this set too!) 

Favorite Card: There's something amusing about Kevin Millar and the fact he's holding up his hands. It wouldn't surprise me if he was attempting to mime being trapped in a box or something...

Time Travel Trading Update #86

 

7 years. I'm starting the 7th year of this little trading endeavor. I started out with just a single pack of 2018 Topps, and now almost 300 trades later and I'm still going strong. It's been tradition each year to include a pack of the latest Topps base set. This will be the 7th pack I've added, the rest is all you guys. Thank you so much for the support!

 

 It seems you can't find single packs in the retail stores anymore, so I had to buy a blaster box and pick one. And yes, full disclosure, I pick the pack that I like the least. Not that this one is bad or anything.

By adding this pack, I also get to do something I've never done before: Start a post with cards from 2024, and (spoiler alert!) end with a card from 1924, a nice neat 100-year span! But first, we have some great trades to go through...

 

We start things off a trade from Bo (Baseball Cards Come to Life!). You might have missed Bo's regular offerings last month. Bo's return trade from last time came a bit later than normal, and just missed my self-imposed deadline.

As always, some great cards! There's a little football and basketball mixed in with the baseball, plus a very cool cards from the 1952 Topps Look 'n See set!

 

Another one of my regulars, the always generous Brendan (The View From The Third Floor) picked up some early 80's cards. He usually sends more than he trades for, and is probably one of the main reasons why my trade stack has over 800 cards in it now!

I'm seriously considering snagging that Helton card for myself. I'll let everyone else have first crack at it though!

 

Guess who's back? (Back again!) Bo is back! (Tell a friend!) Now that song is stuck in my head... Anyway, Bo didn't waste any time sending cards for last month's trade. This one packs a wallop with over a dozen 1955 Topps cards!

Hey, the Pacific Legends are cool too, but those 55's!

I find it amusing when different trade partners send me cards from the same set. Just like that, I now have two cards from the 1952 Topps Look 'n See set! On the right is a card from the 1924 Lambert & Butler Wonders of Nature set - 100 years older than the first cards I showed on this post. Amazing.
