Batting ahead of Tony Gwynn as San Diego's leadoff hitter, Wiggins stole a club record 70 bases in 1984. Sadly, his cocaine addiction led to him becoming the first Major League ball player to die as a result of AIDS. He was only 32 at the time of his death, and weighed 75 pounds. 

6 Degrees Of Raffy - A Choose Your Own Adventure!

It's been almost a year since I've done a 6 Degrees post - I'll admit I wasn't sure I was going to continue the series, even though it's been well received by my readers. It originally started out as "6 Degrees Of Mookie" where I connected randomly selected cards from my collection to future Hall of Famer and former Red Sox star Mookie Betts. That worked well for awhile, and then Mookie got traded. 

Three years later, in 2023, I revived the series. Now renamed "6 Degrees of Raffy",  it's focus was young Red Sox All-Star Rafael Devers, who had recently signed an 11-year extension that was at the time the 6th largest contract in MLB history. Surely with an extension that long the series will flourish and continue, right? Who knew after just a few years into it, things would quickly sour.

The last 6 Degrees post was back in November, and I tried out connecting a card to a young Red Sox Gold Glover who also happened to be nicknamed "Raffy", Ceddanne Rafaela.

Well, Mr. Rafaela earned his first All-Star appearance this season, and is well on his way to another Gold Glove. It's time to take the interim tag off and make him the newest star of the series! Long may he rein!

Of course, I end up in a situation that deviates from the norm. This is where you are going help. 

As I normally do, I hoped on the TCDB and used a feature there that randomly selects a card from my collection. I was not prepared for the selected card:

 

2015 Panini Diamond Kings #71 Joe Cronin

This is one of those sets that combines cards of current players with players from years past. Cronin is one of those players from yesteryear.  The first step is to connect him to one of his teammates within the 2015 Panini Diamond King set. Here's the list of available options:

• Brock Holt
• David Ortiz
• Dustin Pedroia
• Mookie Betts
• Ted Williams
• Xander Bogaerts
• Anthony Ranaudo
• Edwin Escobar
• Matt Barnes
• Rusney Castillo
• Bryce Brentz 

Only one player on that list was ever a teammate of Joe Cronin. That's obviously Ted Williams, who played with Joe from 1939 - 1942.  If I wanted to adhere to the strict definition of "teammate", then Ted is my only option. There's also the question of what Ted Williams cards I can use. If I stick with his playing days, I'm looking no further than 1960. If I include his manager cards I could start the next step well into the 70's, but I'd have to allow that he was still not a "teammate" so much as someone who was in uniform and on the field with the players during games. Either way, that would require me to go decades back. The whole point of the exercise is to may as few step as possible to get to a Raffy card. Picking one of the modern players from the 2015 Panini Diamond Kings set would get me to my goal quicker, even if they never even lived at the same time as Joe Joe Cronin, let alone played with him.

 

So here's where you come in faithful readers! In the comments, pick an option: 

1. It's more important to connect teammates: connect to Ted Williams (playing years only)
2. It's more important to connect guys who at least worked together: connect to Ted Williams (managing years OK)
3. It's more important to reach Ceddanne in as few steps as possible: connect to a modern player

Whichever choice gets the most votes will be the path I take to create the chain. Oh, and since I know someone will suggest this, no I will not do all the options. I'm trying to establish precedence here!

Yesterday Morning

No talk of baseball or sports cards today. This post is personal, an avenue to process an all too scary reminder that life is precious, and gratefulness needs to be practiced on a daily basis...

 

This made national news. Maybe you caught a glimpse of this on the news or in your social media feeds:

 

 

That elementary school is where my two youngest daughters attend.  This was my Wednesday morning, and the fear and helplessness that I felt for hours I would not wish on anyone.

 

Let's get the facts and important stuff out of the way first: All the kids are safe, with just one staff member receiving superficial wounds. A staff member spotted the guy with a gun outside the school, and lockdown procedures were in effect before he was able to force he way in by shooting out a glass door. Police were on scene within 3 minutes of the initial 911 call. The shooter offed himself in the school library. 

As far as my kids go, they are fine. They didn't see/hear any of the major stuff. (Although my sister-in-law, who teaches at that school, was the closest classroom to where he gained entry, and not only heard him break in, but he jiggled the handle to her locked classroom as well before moving on. Scary stuff!) My kids understand something serious was going on, knew the lockdown was not a drill, but thankfully have been spared the trauma of what happened and what could have happened. They were more upset by the fact they had to leave their backpacks at school then anything. I'm grateful for that. 

My wife and I are also fine. The shock of it all is starting to wear off, and I hope in the days and weeks ahead  we'll have more answers. That's the worst of it. The lack of answers or any confirmed information.  My day started off normally with me dropping both girls off at school. Normal day as always. About an hour and a half later I get to work, and before I can even get settled in, my wife calls. She's scared, and tells me that her dad told her about a guy with a gun at the school. (He had been called by my brother-in-law, who was called by his wife the teacher. That's how I find out - fifth hand!) By now it's also all over Facebook, so she leaves works and heads over. I also leave work, but I'm 2 towns over and have an 11 mile drive with just me and my thoughts, most of it in prayer. I park a block away from the school and catch up with my wife. 

I heard through the grape vine that all the kids and staff are accounted for, and that they are bussing them to a nearby church where we should go for "reunification". (I swear I never want to hear that word again. I heard it so much that day and it's such a cold and sterile word like a doctor telling you you need a "procedure").  Anyway, my wife and I waited for a bit. She wanted to see one of the busses leave before we made our way. When we got to the church it was chaotic. There's not enough parking to accommodate a school full of parental vehicles. We found a spot and was directed to the church's fellowship hall. We were given forms to fill out for each child, and from there we waited. That was a miserable experience in it's own right. The room was packed with hundreds of anxious, stressed out parents...and no A/C. No one had any concrete information on what exactly happened, and every bit of hearsay was eventually met with some contradicting bit of hearsay. Eventually school staff started bringing out kids one at a time, which despite the circumstances went relatively smoothly. Just before 11am, my wife and I were reunited with our daughters.

Neither my wife and I went back to work, and spent the rest of the day trying to cull what info we could, checking in with concerned family and friends, and thanking God for the safety of our kids and all involved. This was every parent's nightmare, and one I never would have thought might happen at this school. For those with kids, give them an extra hug today. For those who work in a school system, I pray you never have to find out first hand, but know that whatever procedures and plans your school has in place for such emergencies may not be perfect, but will be effective. I have no doubt the actions of the teachers and staff at that school kept this from being even more tragic, and did their best to keep the kids calm and safe.

TCDB Trade Recap: Cards From Phoenix, AZ

Another day, another TCDB trade, this time with a guy named Joe. I helped him fill some 2026 Topps base set needs and I picked up some Red Sox needs:

 

 

Favorite Card: 2023 Topps Update #US186 Narciso Crook (RC)  

 

Crook got 4 games with the Cubs in 2022, and was signed as minor league depth by the Red Sox after that season. He never appeared for the the Red Sox, making this a 0-year card. It's cards like this that make me love to hear the discussions on who makes a set from the powers that be.

TCDB Trade Recap: Cards From Greenville, TN

Time to catch up on the TCDB trades. This trade was with a collector named Billy. I sent Billy some Archives base needs on his list, and picked up a page full of current Red Sox needs: 

 

Once Series 2 was released, I wanted to try and finish up acquiring the last 3 Red Sox cards I needed from Series 1. I also managed to add a selection of Update series needs, as well as one more Red Sox card from the 2019 Topps 150th Anniversary parallel I needed. (If I was ever crazy enough to complete a parallel set, this would probably be the one. I really like the simple tribute to 150 years of baseball). 

 

Favorite Card: 2019 Topps - 150th Anniversary #373 Christian Vazquez. (I almost went with the 2020 Topps Update MLB All-Star Rivals, but I couldn't let a Yankee share credit for a win now could I?)

Talk about your baseball lifer! Beatty played professionally from 1986 to 1997, with a total of 7 games in the Big Leagues in 1989 and 1991. After retirement, he began coaching and is still coaching today! He is currently the pitching coach for the High-A Spokane Indians.

Sometimes cards just don't get traded. It's time to take some cards that have languished in the Time Travel Trading stack for over 3 years and put them to rest. Finally, another TCDB trade with a gent named  Ken, who in addition to a bunch of 1989 cards sen in some amazing vintage. One of each remain, with the 1948 Bowman being particularly noteworthy.

 

These cards are close to entering my collection. The only thing stopping me is a last minute stay of execution (i.e. a trade for an older card)! It's up to you! 

 

The Collector's Anniversary Celebration Extravaganza!

 

 

There will come a day when we will all stop collecting. Whether it's health, finances, or just a shift in priorities, the hobby we love now will no longer be a hobby. If we're lucky, we'll have a say when that time comes. 

 

Today we celebrate one of those enthusiasts who is choosing to have his say. Today is the 10th anniversary of Chris's blog, The Collector, and this is also his 40th year of collecting. With those round-numbered landmarks reached, Chris has decided that 2026 will be his last year of collecting. 

 

Although I have nothing but respect for his choice, I must admit it's a bittersweet moment for me. Chris was one of the first blogger "friends" I made after starting my own blog in 2017. That winter, I decided to participate in a Secret Santa exchange held by the legendary Matt from the old blog Bob Walk The Plank. I was selected to be Chris's Secret Santa. (I had to dig through the archives - completely forgot I sent him some Garbage Pail Kids cards!) Being his Secret Santa led me to his blog, and I've been a faithful reader ever since. 

 

As any of his faithful readers could tell you, Chris is quite a talented writer and story teller. He also does some of the best research work I've ever seen. His numerous posts like his All-Time Teams series are guaranteed to teach you at least one new fact or piece of trivia. My hope is that even after Chris stops collecting, he'll continue writing in some form or another.

 

As part of his big anniversary celebration extravaganza, Chris generously sent out some gift packages to a few of us that have enjoyed the ride with him. All he asked was we don't post about it until today, his official 10th blogging anniversary.  

 

So what did I get from my not-quite-Secret not-quite-Santa? A lot...

 

 

Let's start with this bag of penny sleeves, which are always useful!

 

 

Also included was this rack-pack of 1986 Topps! I'll save you the math - 1986 was 40 years ago, when Chris started collecting. He's working on completing the set before the year ends. 1986 Topps I too plan on completing one day - I have 2/3 of it already. As of now I plan on freeing these cards at a later date. Perhaps when I'm ready to commit to the set build, it'll make for a nice post to kick off the journey! 

 

 

The most eye-catching item in the box was of course this purple mystery bag! Inside were 2 packs - a pack of 1990 Upper Deck plus  the 30+ card mystery pack featuring the rookie card of former Dodger sensation turned bad boy Yasiel Puig. 

 

Since I decided to hold off on opening the rack pack, I felt I needed to open the Upper Deck pack at least: 

 

I can't complain about this one! Bo Jackson, Jack Morris, Roger Clemens and Dwight Evans make this a great pack. I don't even mind getting two copies of Chet Lemon! (The hologram is the Indians' logo if anyone cared.) 

 

As far as the mystery pack goes, most of those cards will remain a mystery for now. 80% of the pack contained cards from sports I don't collect like football and basketball. The only proper thing to do would be to pay it forward and give those cards away to anyone who wants them. Once I have time to catalogue and take pics, I'll have giveaway post. I'll probably dig through my collection and expand on the available cards too. 

 

There were some highlights for me however. There were a couple of Red Sox cards in there, including a short print variation. A few Hall of Fame/eventual Hall of Fame players as well. I also got a few autographs/serial numbered cards. Anyone out there happen to be a Jared Kelley/White Sox fan?   

 

Now...on to the good stuff! Chris and I are both Red Sox fans. On one hand, that means that Chris knows what I like! On the other, I couldn't begrudge the man if he chose to hold onto any cards he deemed worthy while he opened up numerous packs of Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary and other assorted goodies! In the box he sent were many loose cards in hard plastic containers. 

 

 

These two were in screw down cases. I'm not a big fan of screw down cases, but they have their uses. I'll likely free these two and put others in there place.

 

Speaking of the Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary, Chris sent along a few from those sets. By the way, it was fun watching Chris open these packs on the videos he posted.  (For what it's worth, now that I now know what you look and sound like, you remind me of one of my cousins...you're not partially Italian by chance are you?)

 

 

Other cards in the hard sleeves included another card in my quest for the 2024 Heritage The Fred Lynn Files set build, a great Eck, plus some shiny! (I'm digging that Rafaela card! Nice vibrant red on it!)

 

The box also included a team bag that was filled with lots and lots of Red Sox!  

 

 

Over twenty assorted Red Sox cards! I won't show them all, but I did cherry pick an assortment of favorites to show off: 

 

A few needs, with some exciting rookies and legends of the game to boot! The pack didn't contain all Red Sox though! There were two cards that didn't fit the theme:

 

 

Of course, these are two cards I need for my 1977 Topps set build! I'm down to just 4 cards left. My goal is to eventually trade/buy the last ones before the baseball season wraps up. 

 

One final item to close out all of this goodness. Chris specifically requested this to be opened last...

 

Looking at just the front and back, it appears to be more Platinum Anniversary cards. Which was in fact the case.

 

So why did Chris request this to be the last thing opened? Because sandwiched withing these two cards, Chris truly saved the best for last!

 

I had to laugh a little when I saw this beautiful 1952 Bowman card. For context, when Chris first announced his anniversary celebration box breaks, he asked readers to claim a number and a favorite player with that number. I picked #6 for the legendary Red Sox lifer Johnny Pesky. When Chris did the first box break of Chrome Platinum Anniversary, he mentioned if he pulled any of the named players he'd put them aside for us. I found that amusing, as Pesky hasn't been in a Topps product in over 20 years! Chris got the last laugh, because I got a Pesky anyway!

 

Chris, thank you for this amazingly generous package, but a bigger thanks for being a friend and valued blogger/collector. If 2026 is truly the end of your collecting days, I wish the extra time afforded to you is filled with joyful and memorable moments. If somewhere down the road the itch returns, I will be one of many to welcome you back with open arms! Either way, as I mentioned before, I hope you keep writing in one form or another. I wish nothing but good things for your future.

Oh, those 1986 Mets! Teufel and 3 teammates were arrested in July of that season for their part in a bar fight with an off duty police officer in Houston. Teufel was fined $200 and given 1 year of probation. The bar would later sell "Houston Police 4, Mets 0" t-shirts during the ‘86 NLCS.

Time Travel Trading Update #116

 

Before we begin with the festivities, an announcement: The Time Travel Trading Remnants post that is usually scheduled on the Friday following the main TTT post will be postponed this week until next week Monday. There will be a special post on Friday instead. Sorry to disappoint you Remnant die-hards out there. ;) We now continue will our regular broadcast schedule:

 

This week's post features some of the most interesting cards we've had in awhile. Are they interesting enough to get traded for an older card? We shall see... 

 

Greg (Night Owl Cards) starts us off with a pair. It still seems weird to me that Karros' son is in the Majors now. 

Gavin (Baseball Card Breakdown) sent me down a rabbit hole. First, the baseball cards - simple, no explaination needed!

 

Gavin also sent some interesting non-sport cards as well. Two of these cards are from a 1933 German set of actors and actresses:

I had to do some research on these two people, and both have tragic stories. After fleeing Nazi Germany, she ended up a political prisoner in the USSR and died of typhus in a cell at the age of 41. She ended up burried in an unmarked mass grave. Pallenberg was an actor, singer in comedian who starred in a few German films. He died in an airplane crash. 

 

Gavin also included these cards, but didn't have much information on them. I was able to find some other instances of these cards online (here, here, and here) that would make them part of the 1930 Player's Cigarettes Country Sports set of cards. However, if you look at the links, you'll notice that the backs are not the same. It's almost like these cards were replicated with blank backs, and then someone stamped some church information on them. I have no choice but to list them as the original set, but I'm going to tag them as replicas just to be safe.

 

Bo (Baseball Cards Come To Life!) also included some interesting stamps with his most recent trade. I didn't have to do much reseasrch here. These 1949 Eureka Sportstamps came from an eBay lot Bo had won recently.

Leo Durocher's stamp is now officially the oldest thing in the trade stack featuring a baseball Hall of Famer!

 

Brendan (The View From The Third Floor) picked up some more modern cards this last go around, and sent back a lot of cards from the late 80's. Sure, cards from this era are overproduced, but every player in this bunch Brendan sent is either a Hall of Famer or a multi-time All-Star. These were the big names of the 80's!

 

Finally, I made a TCDB trade with regular blog reader and trade partner Mark Z. Per usual, he found Cardinals cards he needed (plus a few football cards). I got some excellent cards in return:
