Repack Haiku #409 (Bob Welch)

Won Cy Young Award
Due to twenty-seven wins
Rocket was better

1991 Bowman #215 Bob Welch

Welch won the AL Cy Young Award in 1990 when he led the league with an impressive 27 wins, which was 5 more than the runner-up, teammate Dave Stewart. However, Roger Clemens was undeniably the best pitcher in the league that year and bested Welch in most statistics.

  1. So if WAR is to be believed, a replacement-level pitcher in Welch's starts would have gone 24-9? That seems hard to believe.

    1. Considering the A's offense gave him an average of 5.21 runs per start, it's a little more believable. That team won 103 games for a reason!

  3. If only Clemens had shown up in the postseason that year. :/

Welch didn't deserve the Cy by today's standards, but 27 wins is the most I've ever seen a pitcher compile in one season.
