On the last day of the 1978 regular season, the Yankees held a slim 1 game lead over the Red Sox. Although the Red Sox finished the season strong, winning their last eight games, they needed the Yankees (who had won 6 straight themselves) to lose. Rick Waits tossed a complete game victory over New York, setting the stage for the historic tie-breaker.
His last name seems to be apt, as it does indeed appear that Rick is in fact waiting for something :)
