Named first manager
Of hopeful expansion team
Orlando SunRays
When his stint with the Royals ended after the 1990 season, he agreed to become the first manager of the Orlando SunRays. This of course was contingent on Orlando winning one of the two expansion teams in 1993. That obviously never happened, and Boone didn't get a chance to manage until 1995.
Just looked up his managing record and I thought he managed longer and had more success than he did. Didn't realize Orlando was in the running back in '93.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a very interesting fact. I did recall a team called the Orlando SunRays and couldnt figure out why.
ReplyDeletethat is some good trivia. bill russell managed the orlando rays in 1999 - they were the double-a affiliate for the devil rays then.
ReplyDeleteI know of the SunRays, but didn't know that they were a possible expansion team at one time.
ReplyDeleteNever heard that tidbit of knowledge. In fact I wasn't even familiar with the SunRays.
ReplyDeleteI also wasn't aware of this potential MLB team, although it does remind me of a minor league hockey team from the same time period called the Orlando Solar Bears. Nice job working the info into a haiku!
