Free Bubblegum And Pop*

*Yes, I grew up in Western New York - we call it "pop", not "soda".  Even after living down south for 15 years, I still insist on calling it by my preferred regional dialect. Don't judge me.

Last month, Jay (Card Hemorrhage) had a Free Card Friday, and while there weren't any Red Sox in that day's group, I did snag a couple of fantastic cards:

That Griffey has to be one of the greatest cards the 90's ever produced. It's such a fun card and the look on his face cracks me up. I also couldn't pass up a young Nolan Ryan holding a bat. He looks like he just got out of school.

Thanks for the cards, Jay!

  1. 1. This isn't controversial as "pop" is the correct term, so enjoy being correct!
    2. That Griffey is part of '95 Pinnacle, a.k.a. the best original Pinnacle version ever.

I will not be taking questions at this time.

Very cool of Jay to get in on the Free Card Friday thing--I should really try to do that myself.

  2. I grew up in the souther tier of NY and it's always been soda! One of my college roommates was from Buffalo and during move in saw a case of Snapple I had and his mom said "that's a lot of pop." I was like "huh???"

  3. I totally missed that free Friday. Fridays are too busy for me for someone to be giving away free stuff. What about Free Mondays?

Almost all of New York State is soda country until you get to Buffalo (maybe it's 'pop' in Rochester? I don't know, who cares, it's Rochester). It's yet another charming aspect of Buffalo.

Do you remember the Pop Shoppe? Canadian company but they had stores in Buffalo. LOVED that store and those adorable pop bottles.

    1. I think Rochester was right on that pop/soda border..I think people there have learned to accept either.

I recall the Pop Shoppe bottles, but I think the shops themselves closed up when i was in grade school. I don't think I ever had the pleasure.

  4. I think I've only heard someone use the word "pop" to order a soda on television or in movies. Maybe I'll start using it around here and make it a west coast thing too :D

  6. That Griffey card is fantastic. And I guess Connecticut is "soda" country" cause I never heard anyone call it 'pop'. I dont think they say 'pop' in NJ, either. Maybe down south towards Philly.
