A Trio Of Trades Completes The Set!

Last year, I didn't complete any major sets. When I realized how close I was to completing the 2024 Topps Holiday set, I was highly motivated to get it done. Fortunately, I found numerous people on the TCDB that looked like they were working on the same set, so I was able to make some quick and easy swaps!

 

The first trade I'm showing off if from Aaron in Pennsville, NJ. Aaron's return knocked these off the list:

 

 

I followed that up with a smaller trade with Nick in Portland, OR.

 

 

Finally, one last trade with Phillip in Owingsville, KY.

 

 

Thanks to these three trades and these three awesome trade partners, the 20024 Topps Holiday set is complete! This marks the second Holiday set I've completed, with the 2019 set being the first. I've also been making great progress on the 2024 base set, so hopefully I'll have that one done before Opening Day as well!

Ramsey was one of Whitey Herzog's key bench guys during that 1982 season, and filled in for Ozzie Smith late in the season when an injury caused the Hall of Famer to miss 2 weeks.

Comical Erorrs: Bob Uecker

Sometimes it's funny where you find inspiration...

When the great Bob Ueker died on January 16th, I went on to the TCDB and looked at his cards. (Did you know that according to the database, he only has 62 cards? Guys nowadays have that many just within a single set release!) Anyway, one of those 62 cards was from a set I had never heard of before, even though it was by popular card artist Bob Laughlin. 

 

The 1977 Laughlin Erorrs set (yes the misspelling is intentional) is a 40 card set that is dedicated to errors that appear on baseball cards! It's a great little set with those great Laughlin cartoons, and I thought it would be fun to do a semi-regular series dedicated to the set and errors found within! 

As the inspiration behind this new series, we'll kick things off with Mr. Ueker (That comment does sound like something Ueker would say doesn't it?) His error comes from his 1963 Topps card:

 

According to the Laughlin card, his error can be found on the back where the card number resides. All of the other player cards from this set don't have that black box  around the card number. True enough, no other player from that set has the box, although the box is used elsewhere. You can find it around the number on cards for managers, league leaders, team cards, rookies, and combo player cards.

 

I tried to find other examples of cards where a border exists where there shouldn't be, or instances of card numbers not looking the same as the rest of their counterparts. It was kind of exhausting to be honest, and I didn't get far with the limited amount of searching I did. The closest thing I could find actually happens in the same 1963 Topps set. The card for Art Fowler also contains an error with his card number, but his is due to the color used:

 

Can anyone else think of an error card where there is either a border or lack of one on a card that makes it stand out from the rest of the set?

TCDB Trade Recap: Cards From Clearwater, FL

Just to give you fair warning, over the next few weeks and months, you're going to be seeing a lot of 2024 Topps and Topps Holiday.  When I committed myself to finishing these sets, I started making a lot of trade offers on the TCDB. One of these trades came from a fellow trader named Brett. By the looks of his want list, it appeared he was working on the 2024 Topps Holiday set too, which made us a good match to swap some cards.

 

This trade knocked 10 more cards off the trade list! (Spoiler alert: once all my pending trades have come in, this set will be complete!)

Favorite Card: Lindor is the big name here, but I like the forward facing angle on the Julien card!

2019 Topps Update #US164 Sergio Romo

A 3-time World Series winner with San Francisco, Romo ended his 15-year career in 2023 by signing a minor league contract with the Giants. Throughout Spring Training, every time a kid asked him for his autograph, he asked for them to sign his hat first. When he made his final appearance at an exhibition game at Oracle Park, he wore that hat as a thank you to fans that supported him.

It's been a long time since I completed page 2 of my Red Sox Frankenset! Seems like a good time to start the 3rd page. Just a refresher, I'm going through my Red Sox doubles and picking the best at each number for the Frankenset. Let's roll!

Favorite Card: 1992 Post #19 Wade Boggs

My Choice: same

A happy Boggs wins by default! At least it's a relatively nice food issue card, despite the lack of an MLB-licensed logo and a bat that strangely disappears behind his neck.

Favorite Card: 2008 Topps #20 Daisuke Matsuzaka

My Choice: same

As much as I liked Gator as a player, this is not his best card (that one already made it to the Frankenset!). He looks like he smelled something unpleasant. Dice-K gets the win!

Favorite Card: 1987 Topps - 1986 All-Star Game Commemorative Set (Glossy) #21 Roger Clemens

My Choice: 1992 Ultra #21 Jody Reed

Finally, some real choices! I love me some All-Star Glossy cards, especially if it features the Rocket and some cars in the background. However, this spot goes to Jody and the great action shot of him hurdling an Athletics runner.

 

With these selections, Here's how the top line of Page 3 looks:

Not bad, given the lack of choices for the first two spots. No standout amazing cards, but solid all-around.

Trolled By A Box Of Stadium Club

When you are primarily a team collector, opening packs is pretty hit or miss. Some days the cardboard gods smile upon you, other days you get shut out.

I think this is the first time where the powers that be actually pointed and laughed at me.

I had an opportunity around Christmastime to purchase a hanger box of Stadium Club. I've become a little more selective when cards happen to show up in my local stores, having only purchased the base set and holiday sets. Stadium Club has always been a good rip, so I bought it.

 

8 packs, each with 10 cards. I had hope that maybe one or two cards would be feature Red Sox players, and would have considered the purchase to me an resounding success even if my lone Red Sox card happened to be the Greatest Red Sox card of 2024. Alas, I did not get any Boston players. What the box did provide in abundance was Yankees:

 

Oh, and each of the 8 packs contained one red parallel. Yeah, you can guess how well that went!

 

 

16 Yankee cards, an average of 2 per pack. Really, Stadium Club, you could collate the box just a little? It's bad enough when 20% of the cards are of one team, but it's 10 times worse when it's your favorite team's rival!

 

The cardboard gods did make it up to me again somewhat. Despite the wicked burn, just before the year ended I once again had the chance to pick up a trio the smaller hanger packs. Again, no Red Sox base cards, but the included pink parallels look pretty:

 

Here's hoping I'll have continued good luck ripping cards in 2025!

Fernandez spent the 1995 season with the Yankees, and in doing so became the last player to wear that number for the team. The following year, the number was given to their manager Joe Torre. The Yankees retired the number in 2014.

The Lingering Threads Of 2024

It's hard to believe we are almost a month into 2025 already. As for me, I'm still thinking back to 2024. Well, at least I am when it comes to baseball cards. Awhile back, I mused about completing the 2024 base set. Thanks to two of my fellow bloggers, I'm incredibly close to finishing off the set!

 

The first boost of cards came from Johnny (Johnny's Trading Spot). He sent me 145 cards from the set, which left me with just 35 to go!

Shortly thereafter, I received a package from Fuji (The Chronicles of Fuji)!

He sent 86 cards my way, and between him and Johnny I am now down to needing just 23 cards!

Sveum had just finished his first season as manager of the Chicago Cubs when he went hunting with the Hall of Famer. Yount's errant shot struck Sveum in the right ear, and the two friends actually laughed it off.

Time Travel Trading Update #97

 

Time Traveling to a new year! Next month's post will mark my 7th year of the Time Travel Trading project, so let's make it a big one! Hopefully some of these new cards will tempt you...

 

I'm starting the year off with a personal trade. Once Dick Allen got elected to the Hall, I decided to add his 1972 card to my collection.  In his place is one of baseball's most memorable personalities.

I also made a small TCDB trade with a gent named Andrew.  He picked up a football card he needed, and I was able to select the iconic Kurt Bevacqua card in return!

Next up is the monthly trade from Brendan (The View From The Third Floor). With the NFL playoffs in full swing, I'm hoping everyone has football on their minds and ready to pickup some great cards!

 

Tom (The Angels In Order) also picked up a single card from the stack, and generously sent back more than was necessary. Gotta love those 80's Topps stickers!

 

Bo (Baseball Cards Come To Life!) picked up some great cards in his latest trade, and his return included some great vintage and a selection of cards from Baseball Cards Magazine! I had a whole stack of those in high school, but I misplaced them somehow. I never removed the cards from within either....

Finally, we end the first Time Travel Trading post of 2025 with a trade from Greg (Night Owl Cards). I'm excited by his return package. Did you know that in all these years of Time Travel Trading, I've never received a card from the iconic 1952 Topps baseball set? I have now!

The Time Travel Trading Project is simple in concept. I started out with a random pack of 2018 Topps Series 1 baseball cards. My aim was to trade every card in that pack for something older. Each card I receive in turn is then made available for trade, with the goal to get the oldest card I can get.
