Repack Haiku #275 (Heathcliff Slocumb)

Great trade for Red Sox!
Sent Slocumb to Mariners
For D-Lowe and Tek

Widely considered the worst trade in franchise history, the eventual AL West Champion Mariners were desperate for relievers in 1997. They gave up two players they thought had peaked and wouldn't amount to much. Derek Lowe made the All-Star team as both a starter and as a reliever for Boston, while Jason Varitek became the Red Sox's most recent team captain. Both players were key members of the 2004 World Championship team.

  1. I actually remember this one, and yeah, it was pretty bad. And that's saying something too, because the Mariners have made a LOT of bad trades over the years.

  2. This is a really bad trade that I don't hear about as much. I still wonder what the Mariners would've looked like in the late '90s/early 2000s with a Lowe-Varitek battery.
