Time Travel Trading Update #51

Fair warning - This update is a big one! 7 trades plus a fresh pack of Topps 2021 means that I have over 70 new cards to show off today!  That's a lot of cards, and I'm hopeful that they will generate a lot of interesting new trades!

We'll start off with the new pack. This project started out with nothing more than a single pack of 2018 Topps, and every year since I've added a pack of the latest base set. I was genuinely concerned I wasn't going to be able to do that this year, as retail stock continues to be more miss than hit around here. Fortunately I was able to find a few packs, and put one aside for you.

I've already commented on this year's set design, so I won't rehash it here. I will say there are some decent cards here. The Gibson is particularly nice.

On to the trades! Leading off is a bunch of 1972 Topps, courtesy of TCDB member Chris (This is the second half of a trade. The first half I showed off here). For the Time Travel portion of the trade, he nearly cleared out my stock of 1973 Topps in exchange for these:

Next is my first Time Travel trade with the famous Night Owl! Greg added some 1967 cards to the stack in exchange for a trio of 1970 Topps!

Another TCDB trade netted me a couple of awesome Exhibits cards. The age of these cards is unknown. They are officially listed between 1947-1966, so maybe just maybe these are the oldest baseball cards in the trade stack now. Unofficially, I can say they are the first pair of baseball cards from the 1940's that have made their way here!

A blog reader named Ken contacted me with a trade proposal as well. he ended up sending a stack of cards spanning 4 decades!

Bo from Baseball Cards Come to Life comes through yet again with some real time-travel cards - nothing like Topps recreating classic cards, is there?

Brendan from the blog The View From The Third Floor likes to surprise me. He'll send unexpected cards my way, and include a note with the cards he wants in return. So far he's been pretty lucky getting the cards he wants. This is our third Time Travel Trade, and what better way to mark the occasion than cards representing 3 sports!

I've saved the best for last. My esteemed blog readers, we have a new leader for oldest card in the trade stack! A TCDB member named Chris, who first participated in Time Travel Trading three years ago, makes his return with a card sure to blow a few people off their feet:

I never thought when I started this project that I would ever obtain a card over 100 years old. Now I have two (with a third one set to reach the century mark next year!)  Will I ever beat a card from 1910? I'd say it's improbable but then again I thought the same thing when the 1915 Quail first arrived.

The Trade Stack continues to amaze, and there are cards here for every sort of collector! Help me keep this moving along. Make me an offer!

The Time Travel Trading Project is simple in concept. I started out with a random pack of 2018 Topps Series 1 baseball cards. My aim was to trade every card in that pack for something older. Each card I receive in turn is then made available for trade, with the goal to get the oldest card I can get.

Number of trades completed: 88
Unique trading partners: 47

Number of cards mailed out: 283
Year of oldest card mailed out: 1953

Number of cards received: 525
Year of oldest card received: 1910-11
