Top 5 Tribute: Gaylord Perry

On December 1st, the baseball community lost Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry. In honor of his amazing career, I humbly submit my 5 favorite Gaylord Perry cards that I own.

 

1971 Topps #70

The oldest Perry card in my collection, Gaylord tied Bob Gibson for the league lead in wins in 1970, winning 23 games that year. He also placed second behind Gibson in Cy Young Award voting that year.

 

1978 Topps #686

Perry's career is forever tied to the legend that he threw spitballs, or at the least was a master at illegally doctoring them. While he never officially confirmed this, he never denied it either, and seemed to enjoy fanning the flames whenever it was brought up. One fun story: During the dedication ceremony of his statue at Oracle Park, he taped tubes of Vaseline to the bottom of the chairs as a special souvenir!

 

1980 Topps #280 

Perry became the first pitcher in history to win the Cy Young award in each league, winning his first one for Cleveland in 1972 and then again for the Padres six years later.

 

1984 Topps #6  

In 1984, Topps issued a special card honoring the retirement of 3 future Hall of Famers. This is the only Topps card featuring him in a Kansas City Royals uniform, the last of 8 teams he played for over his career.

 

2016 Topps Archives #212 

We'll finish things up with a great photo of Perry from his time with the Indians. After the Giants traded him to Cleveland in 1972, Perry introduced himself to the new team by winning his first Cy Young Award, leading the league in wins and complete games.

TCDB Trade Recap: Cards From Covina, CA And Hickory, NC

I'm showing off two small trades today, both made through the TCDB. The first one comes from a Californian named Mike, who helped with a few unusual Red Sox cards:

The Tales of the Game insert set from 2010 Topps contains some of the more off-beat stories in the sport's history. There are quite a few Red Sox tales brought to cardboard, and I'm glad to add the famous "bloody sock" as well as  Fenway's right field pole, named in loving honor of a Red Sox icon not known for hitting home runs.

 

The next trade comes Larry in North Carolina, who helped knock a few base set needs from this year's set.

 

It's still pretty sparse here as far as finding cards at my local Wal-Mart. I haven't had much opportunity to pick up any Series 2. I'm relying more on getting these cards through trade, which ironically is tougher now because I don't have as many newer cards available for trade. It is what it is though, and I'll get my team's cards sooner or later.

Favorite Card: The bloody sock - people don't serious believe that's ketchup do they?

TCDB Trade Recap: Cards From Kalispell, MT

Man, writing posts have been tough lately. I've been busy at both home and work, had the flu over Thanksgiving, and just haven't had that motivation to write. It makes me thankful that I can do a small post like this. Today's trade comes from a TCDB member named Henry.

 

 

I'm very close to getting this set completed - only 6 more cards to go! I probably won't get it done before year's end, but maybe before Spring Training starts.

Nettles was named Captain in 1982, but was traded two years later when his biography, "Balls", contained some less than flattering anecdotes about George Steinbrenner.

14 Years And Counting!

My apologies in advance, as I'm just copying and pasting this from my original post, only updating the number.

Just a heads up, this isn't a sports or sports card related post, but it's one I hope you'll stick around and read nonetheless.

Today is an anniversary of sorts for me. 14 years ago today, I was in a hospital having a cancerous growth removed from my right testicle. I officially became a cancer survivor on this date.

I was lucky. I caught it early enough to where I didn't need chemotherapy. Because of this, I encourage others to perform regular self examinations. Since most of my readership is male, that includes you. I'm providing information to help you learn what to check for. Do yourself a favor and read it. Check yourself. It doesn't take long to do, and it could save your life.

Maybe you've skimmed this post, and maybe you've truly read it. Maybe a few of you will consider this but forget, and maybe some of you will actually take the time to check. If I can get just one person to start regularly checking themselves, then I've done my job.

Go for it. Play with yourself. Just wash your hands before you go back to sorting cards! ;)

A PWE Of Award Winning Cards!

Back toward the end of October (when there was still baseball - that seemed so long ago!), Daniel (It's Like Having My Own Card Shop) had a giveaway. I was among the first five to comment, so that earned me some cards:

 

Just look at that top row! Red Sox players showing off some hardware! J.D. Drew with his All-Star Game MVP award, Josh Beckett with the ALCS MVP, and Mike Lowell with the World Series MVP award. Then there's the Captain, Jason Varitek, with the grand daddy of them all, the World Series trophy! I love seeing awards on cards, and after seeing these cards together, I'm half-tempted to find out how many Red Sox cards have players posing with awards on them. (I can think of at least one other off the top of my head - the 2019 Topps Big League card where J.D. Martinez is posing with Hank Aaron and the Hank Arron Award he won). Oh, and I can't overlook the wonderful unlicensed oddball cards either! 

Favorite Card: The Varitek card will always be an all-time favorite!

The Red Sox traded Stanley back to his former team in August of 1997. One of the players the Red Sox received was a young pitcher named Tony Armas. Four months later, Armas was the PTBNL in the trade that brought Pedro Martinez to Boston.

Trapped In Time: Remnants Of The 27th Trade

 

Good news! Last month's remnant was successfully traded away! Let's see if we can get a little streak going here!

It's ironic that after celebrating the 200th trade for this project, that today's orphaned cards show up. There was a time when the Time Travel Trading Project hit a big lull, with few if any trades happening. In an effort to try and jump start some offers, I put cards that were not moving on the proverbial chopping block, much like I'm doing now. This is one of those times where I cast the line and got a bite.

The very first Time Travel Trade netted me a 1979 Topps and three 1978 Topps cards. I was able to trade the 1979 card, but 8 months later I had no interest in any of the 1978's. Trades had started to slow down, and I decided to give those cards one last pimp before removing them completely. Gavin (Baseball Card Breakdown) rescued two of them, becoming the first trade I had in almost two months!

 

I've talked about how these trades have branched out before. For some reason, this particular branch had some bad luck associated with it. It took 2 1/2 years before I was able to trade the Tony Taylor card, and for whatever reason, the 2 1975 cards still remain. Perhaps it's time to snip this particular branch. If no one claims them by the next update, I'm pulling them and adding them to my collection. 

 

Because Derrel and Bob have been together since the beginning, I'll even entertain a 2-for-1 offer - just one pre-1975 card for the both of them! Who wants them?

Travis Fryman was no slouch, earning 5 All-Star game appearances. However, it's curious that Topps would put him on this card over perennial All-Star starter Cal Ripken Jr.

Time Travel Trading Update #71

 

It's official! 200 Time Travel Trades! I'll be honest, I'm still awed by this. I never thought this little project would get to this point, but here we are!

 

The honor of Trade #200 goes to none other than Greg (Night Owl Cards). As it turns out, I received his cards the same day last month's update was published! As his prize, he got a sneak peak at all these new cards and was able to claim one for himself. As for those cards that came in, we've got a nice variety:

 
It's always cool to see a vintage Buffalo Bill, and I know that Kellogg's card won't last long here!

Our next trade is from a blogger making his first Time Travel Trade! John (Adventures Of A Baseball Card Collector) dove in and claimed some vintage and a few Yankees. The group of cards he sent back spanned 65 years!

Those flowers have fantastic color for something produced in 1939!

TCDB member Abraham came back to time travel again with small little 2 card trade, adding some 1995 Topps to the mix:

Those bottom two cards are from a couple of personal swaps I did. I had a TCDB trade offer for a Sportflics cards that had been here for awhile, so I swapped it out for Jim Morrison. The Super Bowl card is the replacement for a card you'll see later on.

The 1988 Topps UK Mini was the other personal swap that I made. It's a set I'm close to finishing, and  Tony Gwynn was one of the cards I needed. Oh, and if you're eyeing that '65 Diego Segui, sorry but that was the card Night Owl picked for his prize!
